its a civil war token (CWT)

Quote:
1862-1864 Patriotic Civil War Token

Facing an uncertain future, Civil War families and soldiers hoarded small-denomination coins and created a severe coin shortage. Civil War tokens, worth a penny and also known as "Civil War cents", were struck by many different businesses and individuals. They circulated like cents from 1862-1864, until the federal government forbade their use.

Most of these tokens, which are prized Civil War collectibles, advertised the name of a shop or business and are called "store cards". But those available here feature nationalistic images and symbols such as George Washington and the American flag, and slogans like UNION FOREVER -- and are known as "patriotic tokens".

some online dealers and auction sites have them, some either don't or I can't find on their site. There may be some at B&M coin shops, but I haven't looked for them there.

The subject token is VF and not AU-55 as the admittedly unschooled seller purports. This is a common variety, among about 11,000 total. In today's market, top retail for this would be around $25, and these can be found at coin shows in the $15-$20 range.

Avoid buying ones that have an unusually granular or grainy surface as these are most likely cast copies from the 1960's.

By claiming they were "not" one cent, they couldn't be accused of counterfooting.

The common patriotics sold for around $8 a thousand, allowing merchants a profit using them as change.

Store cards might cost $12 a thousand, but acted as advertising for the merchants.
