Hi, I came across this coin on ebay and I noticed some of the surface of the coin is missing, looks like when the top surface of concrete comes off. It's an 1895-O Morgan dollar. I have another coin, not a Morgan, in this same condition. The area is from the chin out to the stars and extends to the bottom of the neck. Would this be a normal minting failure or results from a previous cleaning? Thanks in advance, Ed

don't think anything is "missing" on the Morgan, its just tarnish/stains/toning what ever you want to call it. It could be residue that didn't get cleaned off good after it was cleaned with something that caused this stain but there is really no way to tell by the photos what caused it, but its not a minting error or anything as far as I can tell

with Bryan.

It looks like an incomplete cleaning.

A few questions though about your coin: Is there a discernable "lowering" of your coin's metal level in the affected area? (i.e., is there metal missing? Can you tell a "ridge" with your fingernail as you move it across the coin?)

and

to the Forum!

and

what other coins do you have?

and, of course,

The image in my post I copied from the auction page on ebay. My coin that's similar is an 1820 over 19 half dollar. This does have a small ridge in the left obverse field and extending to the top.
