My grandma had an old penny can that she would let me go through. I filled up a couple of old blue Whitman folders as best I could - of course, there were lots of holes because even in the early 1970's, the early D and S mints were scarce.
That is partly what got me into coin collecting. I still have some of those coins today although I have lost track of which specific ones came from my grandma's penny can.

I got the jar last night. It wasn't as big as I had remembered when I was 6 or 7. but there's still lots of pennies. I poured out about 300 and quickly looked through them for wheats and nice reds. The most recent penny was 1990. As you can see in the next pictures there were alot of 1988's in great condition along with all other 80's dates and some 70's. I meant to bring them to work with me today and take better pictures but I forgot them. I found a few wheats but nothing special. I'm going to search all of them this weekend and I'll give everyone an update with better pictures then. I'm hoping that as I get to the bottom of the jar the dates get older. I asked my Grandmother about it and she said after he gave me that one he started a new jar and she thought it was still in the closet at their house where he kept it. I'm going to try to find it soon! It's great to see everyone was just as excited as I am. I may not find anything of great value but knowing where these pennies came from makes it all worth it. Here's a few pictures of the red ones I found. The color doesn't show up as well in the pictures.

From left to right: 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988(the most), 1989, 1990, and the far right column is a mix of 70's. I didn't serperate mint marks at this point. All P or D. I wish I had some better pictures. Some of these looked fresh from the mint under my magnifying glass.

What's the expiration date on the apple juice? That should give you a rough ballpark on when the collection started. From the style of jar I'd place it in the 1980s, maybe 1970s.

I filled a gallon wine jug with pennies back in college and took it to the casino for my gamblin' money. That gallon of pennies was $40.25.
