A little over 20 years ago my grandfather gave me an old glass apple juice jar of pennies. I think it's a gallon jar. I'm not sure when he collected them but he had them in a closet at his house and gave them to me. I dont think I ever opened it and it went into a cabinet. I had forgotten about it until this week. So I called mother and she checked and it's still sitting in the cabinet where I left it. I'm getting it tonight to sort. I dont know how many pennies that is but I'm guessing it's close to 3 boxes. Wish me luck!

Can't wait to see! I have a blast going through my grandfathers collection of coins. I put a whole thread together for everyone to go through it with me. Search Poppy's collection or oil cans in CCF to see the goodies I found. Can't wait to see what you get! Good Luck!

A question and a suggestion.
Please translate the term "box" into the equivalent number of rolls or a bag. A roll = 50 pennies. A bag = 5000 pennies. Those were the two standard sizes used years ago.
Put down some kind of surface upon which to work. An ordinary towel will keep the pennies from sliding on a smooth surface and should you drop a few they will be less likely to fly off onto the floor.
You're going to have a lot of fun and please do enjoy the memories of your grandfather as you search.

to me a box is $25 or 2500 pennies. so I'm guessing there will be around 7500 pennies

Thanks, asyrp43, So, a box is 50 rolls. You estimate that you have a bag and a half to search through. That gives me a good picture of your task at hand.

Good idea reupman. My plan is to save any AU-BU for my roll set and put the rest back in the jar. But if I find any nice wheats or something like that I'll put his initals on the 2x2. Up until the last 5 years or so 95% of the coins in my collection he bought for me. Not counting ones I found in change. Thanks for the idea.

Enjoy the trip back through time! Gallon jar should hold about 4400 pennies or so.

Now, that's as good as it comes! There's nothing like an old change stash to get a collector excited.
