I personally think ebay needs to fix their feedback system, I'm pretty sure that a lot of people that sell have a higher feedback score because people are afraid of the retaliation Feedback they can get if they leave a negative feedback on someone. Personally when I sell stuff on ebay it is my policy if someone pays right away to leave positive feedback, I dont wait to see what kind of feedback they leave.

Soooo, that would mean that you think the buyer's only responsibility is to pay, correct?

at what point do you consider the sale final ? when payment has been received ? or when the Item has been accepted by the buyer ?
Myself I believe that the latter is correct until the buyer has posted approval of the Item the sale is not complete.
Could the feedback system be improved,, I think there is always room for improvement in most things,, a simple two tiered system Technical (was payment received,, was Item received) and then service
(if there was a problem did the seller make it right ? did the buyer work within the seller guidelines )
Both worth half a positive.
to me something like this would optimise the system.

I don't generally wait to see if someone leaves me positive feedback before I leave them positive feedback. I leave positive feedback for someone who holds up their end of the transaction (buyer or seller). I buy and sell on ebay and I have found that the positives I get from selling are usually because I went out of my way to "accurately" describe the item so the buyer knows what they're getting. Some of the sellers ads are very "misleading" and if they won't answer my request to clarify any questions I have.... I don't bid.

If I am selling an item on ebay, I post a positive feedback when I receive payment. If I am the buyer I post feedback when I receive the item I bid on. I don't like it when I buy something and the seller doesn't give me any feedback when I send the payment. Lately this is becoming a trend for the seller to give feedback once the buyer gives it. If I am the buyer and sent a payment promptly, I should receive a positive feedback. I held up my end of the bargain. I will do the same once I receive my item. That is the way it should be.

There should be a section in ebay for proper auction etiquette.

ebay has always said that feedback should be the final step in any transaction. I give buyers 7 days to decide if they want to return something or not. I figure the transaction is over when: 1) The buyer tells me they got the item, and are happy with it. 2) I hear nothing for 2 weeks, and I know (delivery confirmation) that it has been delivered. Either way, I leave feedback. If the buyer leaves feedback, great. I've mentioned this on other forums, and have been accused loudly and rudely of holding feedback hostage. But I don't, I leave feedback regardless of whether or not the buyer does.

Let's examine the responsibilities of the buyer.... 1) Pay promptly. This one isn't even as simple as it sounds. Pay promptly using an accepted pay method. Our payment methods accepted are impeccably clear. Do you know how many personal checks we get? Last month Susan had to drive 30 miles to pick up $25 because some numb skull wired us money via WU. This guy deserved a negative, even though he paid, but we gave him a positive anyway. 2) Read the auction and understand what they are buying. We used to sell records on another ID. We listed an LP that had a notch cut in the jacket. In addition to a 600px by 600px photo of the jacket, We also stated in 28 point bright red letters that the jacket was notched. We left him positive feedback when he paid. He gets the LP and leaves us a negative... COVER WAS NOTCHED, SHOULD BE STATED IN LISTING. Now, did this guy deserve a positive just because he paid? Absolutely not. We had no way of knowing he was a knucklehead until he got the LP. We got a dozen negatives like this before we decided to stop leaving feedback first. 3) Obey the law.We use to have buyers attempt feedback extortion on a regular basis when we were leaving feedback first. We actually got an email once that all it said was, "Send me $50 in the next 24 hours or I will leave you a negative." Fortunately that particular email, the moron sent the email through ebay and we reported him. He was immediately booted from ebay. We actually had received many negatives from people because we refused to give in to their extortion. We sold a rare Bob Dylan record. It sold for $5500, but was really only worth about $4800. The guy just got caught up in the bidding. Now we've left positive feedback already. The guy emails us and says, after receiving it, flat out, that he is not going to overpay for it, and if we don't refund him $700 he is going to leave us negative feedback. Did he deserve positive feedback because he paid promptly? Absolutely, positively not. All of these type negatives stopped when we stopped leaving feedback when payment was received. We have 1000's of perfectly satisfied customers that fully understand our feedback policy and keep coming back for more. We are so confident in our business practices that we can say there is no reason for any buyer to ever leave us a negative. We accurately represent our items and we offer a 100% money back guarantee, no questions asked, including shipping both ways. If not leaving feedback first avoids getting negatives from people that don't read the listings and extortionists, so it will be. The transaction is never over until the item is received.

It's my policy as a seller to not leave feedback until I'm sure that the buyer has received, and is happy with, their purchase. I mention this either in the auction itself, or in communication with payment. Haven't heard a peep of protest from a buyer yet.

Same here. To me it has nothing to do with forcing the buyer to leave good feedback. I leave feedback once I'm sure the buyer has received the item and is 100% happy with there purchase. I also did a number of my own surveys. If I sell ten items and leave positive feedback for all buyers upon payment, six of that ten will never leave feedback for me. If I sell 10 items and don't leave feedback until the buyer does them eight of the ten buyers will leave feedback. I offer a full refund policy and as of almost 600 transactions I have never had to refund or had a return. Once I see through conformation that the buyer has received the item.I leave feedback weather the buyer has or not. it would be nice if all buyers would have the same consideration.

I have the clock ticking on my last sale for feedback. The buyer received it on the 13th, and I've yet to hear from him. On the 21st, after the end of my 7-day return guarantee, he gets his Positive whether he likes it or not. $500 coin and the guy can't be bothered to tell me he got it, much less leave feedback.

What I have seen that is wrong is when some start a new ebay name and begin to sell hundreds and hundreds of auctions for advice for say $.99 and alot of the times the sales are private. I can only imagine it is between a group that builds the positive feedback up to powersellers level and most likely no money really changes hands.. Probably boasting the feedback before starting unscrupulous sales. So the unwitted assume the person has a high positive feedback.

If you don't like personal checks then why do you say you accept them in your add? (I'm assuming that you do, if I assumed wrong then I'm sorry)
No offense, but does your adds say you take WU? If no one within 30 miles can pay you a WU transition then you should decline the sale and tell him to pay by whatever acceptable payments you have listed in your add.
Once again no offense, but I take it you believe in retaliation feedback? he did his part in paying, yes he should have read the add better, thats his stupidity- and yes he should have contacted you first before posting the neg.
3) Obey the law.
We use to have buyers attempt feedback extortion on a regular basis when we were leaving feedback first.
We actually got an email once that all it said was, "Send me $50 in the next 24 hours or I will leave you a negative." Ok this one I totally side with you one, I hope you reported this moron to ebay and he should have his account revoked!!! And possibly prosecuted by the fullest extent of the law.
We sold a rare Bob Dylan record. It sold for $5500, but was really only worth about $4800. The guy just got caught up in the bidding. Now we've left positive feedback already. Once again I think the feedback system needs to be fixed for both the sellers and the buyers.

Bobby- I looked at one of your auctions, I'm going to assume that all your payment instructions are the same on your ebay auctions. If this is so then I would certainly reject any payment that didn't met what I had stated in the add. I didn't see anything in your add that says you accept WU or personal Checks. When I do my ebay auctions I wont accept PC's myself.

When I buy an item I always pay via paypal immediately. What more can I do? As far as I am concerned, as a buyer, I have made this transaction as quick and simple as possible for the seller. I feel that should warrant a positive feedback.
Many sellers do hold feedback hostage until they know what the buyer is going to do. As soon as I get the package, I open it, inspect it and immediately leave feedback. Many times the seller never bothers to return the favor and feedback is never left. That really urks me, especially after I go out of my way to pay fast and leave my feedback asap. If I had left a negative I'll bet they would have returned that favor!
Even if I am not completely satisfied with a purchase or seller, I will not leave a negative because that guarantees one in return even if you have done your part flawlessly.
