Hello friends,

I just had the urge to share this coin with everyone. I collect primarily coins of the Constantinian Era with an affinity for desert patina examples.

I find it rather intriguing to see a 1700 year old coin that looks like this.

Cheers,

-Kurt

Constantine I - Cyzicus Mint - AE Follis - RIC VII 8

O: IMP CONSTA-NTINVS AVG, laureate, draped bust left, holding globe, mappa and sceptre

R: IOVI CONSERVATORI AVGG, Jupiter standing left, chlamys across left shoulder, holding Victory on globe and leaning on sceptre, wreath in left field, ε in right field, SMK in exergue

3.68g, 20mm, 180 degree die axis, 317-320AD

That is a really nice coin, the desert patina and cameo type look is very nice. Looks like someone did a nice job cleaning the coin as well. I know where to get coins that look similar, so I may in the future.

A very nice example, well centred and struck and on a nice round flan. The patina and very nice wreath are an added bonus.

Nice coin. Well centered and struck. Is the color in the image right? If so, that would be the highly desirable red desert patina called Syrian Red. I'm always on the look out for these, but the prices go up quick for the "reds". Again, nice coin.

Thanks all.

BTW, I used to have "abs" just like Jupiter's

JW, yes, the picture is a good representation of what the coin looks like in hand but I thought the "Syrian red" was a bit darker and, well, redder in color.

Regards,

-Kurt

I could possibly be wrong (it wouldn't be the first time nor the last), but I'm fairly sure this is what is called a "Syrian Red" patina. Regardless, it's beautiful!
