I purchased this 1834 Capped Bust quarter O over F variety at an auction. I paid $125. Opinions on grade, issues, value, or my stupidity?

Love this website.

Thanks.

I think enough detail on neck feathers & talons to go VF-20. Nice looking coin. Like the die crack from wing to edge past D.

It's a nice looking coin for sure. I'd probably go VF-20 on it.

Those are hard to find. I read somewhere that the 50c Bust coins were often kept as savings or stores of value in bank vault - hence they are relatively available in higher grades. The 25c Bust coins, on the other hand, were often spent and so nice examples can be few and far between.

Yours has nice eye appeal and detail. I haven't really tracked these price wise, but I spent somewhere in the ballpark for the one in my 7070 type album in low VF condition.

I think you did pretty good. Welcome to the forum!

For comparison, here is my 1834. I bought this raw on ebay and PCGS graded it as VF-30. It has about a 45° rotated die which is common for this date. I don't know if it is the O/F variety though I notice it has filled A's in STATES and AMERICA like your coin.

We, um, cannot comment on your stupidity because you haven't shown any with this coin.

Thanks for the comparison photo Jaobler. Based on the 2 side by side, how do you grade mine? about the same?. Also, do you mind me asking what you paid? I looked at yours closely and I believe you do have the O over F in the word OF. I have a RedBook that shows a good example of it.

I think your coin shows a bit more wear on the hair curls and eagle's head and wing feathers. It also shows a somewhat washed-out color that suggests an old cleaning. It probably makes VF-20 for detail.

I got an outstanding deal on mine. The seller posted dark photos and a vague description and the coin went for just $53, well under my maximum bid. Seems like you just don't find deals like that on ebay any more.

Under a loupe I now see that extra curve of metal between the O and F like it shows in the RedBook. It looks more like the upper curve of an O rather than part of an F to me. In any case, it looks like I do have that variety. Thanks for pointing out the possibility!

I took a close-up of "OF" to show the remnant letter; I guess it does look more like an F than an O; just like the Red Book photo, anyway! I'm always very pleased to discover something new in my own collection!

Very nice coin, agree with VF details, not a bad retail price. Good one!

I have some interesting pics of this coin after really studying it blown up. I have questions.

I can't figure out how to add new pics to this topic so will start a new one. Give me about 30 min.
