They big problem was that change-jar dumps have kept the supply satisfied. Many banks have not needed to order coins from their Federal Reserve Bank, which is how new coins brought into circulation.

Jbuck, if that were the case why soooo many 2011 nickels? I seem to find 2011 coins in everyday change these days. I'm more of the opinion that they are being horded whenever found. Afterall, I didn't see anyone here saying they set them free. Seems everyone is talking how many they have found (and I suspect everyone still 'have' them).

I think I find more 2009 than anybody else, but they are pretty drowned out by 2010 and 2011. I get TONS and TONS of 2011.

Quote: Jbuck, if that were the case why soooo many 2011 nickels? If I recall correctly, the Fed practices "last in, first out" when shipping coin. That is, when orders come in for coin, they ship the boxes closest to the front of the vault. However, I could be wrong. Quote: I'm more of the opinion that they are being horded whenever found. That theory is definitely worth consideration. For the record, I have not seen any post 2008 nickels in my change.

Last In First Out. That makes a ton of sense. So what was the reason for so few nickels in 2009. What is the history going to say? ...am I getting the 1964 thread mixed up here

I'm flooded with 2011 nickels. Just too many! Same with 2011 cents and dimes. The quarters are another story...

I have seen no shortage of post-2008 cents or dimes, while the quarters are hit-or-miss. The nickels are the one to watch, I believe. Quote: So what was the reason for so few nickels in 2009 The Fed was not ordering enough coins from the Mint, so they slowed production.

I also see TONS of 2010 and 2011 pennies and nickels, and the only 2009 Lincoln cents I see alot of are the LP2's. I did get six 2009P dimes out of 3 CWR rolls the other day, and those are easier to find than the nickels ........ at least for me.

I have good knowledge ragarding the 2009 nickels on how they were distributed. The D's were distributed to banks, Walmart, and other large chain stores in Arkansas, Nevada (las vegas mostly), north western Arizona, and Washington. The p's were only distributed in Puerto Rico and a few other carribean islands. You will find them in Florida mostly from tourists and Puerto Ricans who visited Puerto Rico and brought them back to Florida. They never made it to the Florida banks as no armored car service received them in Florida from the local reserve banks/ There is good evidence that all teh 2009 d's made it out of the reserve vaults, but the majority of the p's are likely sitting in reserve vaults somewhere.

Interesting! Where do you get your information from? I was just looking on ebay... The 2009-D rolls are going anywhere from 7-10 times face, but the 2009-P rolls are getting even more insane. $25 for circulated rolls, $50-60 or more for uncirculated!

This is a strange situation! For the record, I have not seen a single 2009 Jefferson nickel in the wild!
