My brother keeps telling me that the reason these nickels are hard to find, besides the relatively low mintage, is that they were all sent to the U.S. territories for distribution. I have looked around but have not been able to verify this story.
Has anyone else heard anything about this?

They were all sent to Florida.

I also heard the same story from a friend. Don't know why they would do such a thing.

They certainly weren't sent to western PA. I was able to get a 2009P and 2009D from a local dealer for a premium. Since then I did find one 2009D while roll searching. Exciting event, but think I'd be happier with a War Nickel or buffalo!

I'm in FL and usually find 3-4 per box while roll searching. I've accumulated 2-3 rolls doing this, but weirdly enough, I'm finding more D mint that P mint lately.

A lot were first being sold out of Puerto Rico as I recall.

There are 86.6 million 2009 Jefferson circulation strikes out there ... That should be enough to satisfy every Jefferson nickel collector on the planet for the next... uhhhhm ... 1000 years. However they were distributed does not matter IMHO ... I have all that I need from roll finds in MD, USA and plenty of duplicates as well. IMHO ... the talk of 2009 Jefferson being 'tough find' is simply the result of their mintage being overwhelmed by other recent dates in the series. David

I find more War Nickels here in central Kentucky than I find 09 P's.

Most that were distributed originally in Puerto Rico...at least that's where I got mine back then.

The prices were nuts for a while on them. I have a feeling a large chunk of the mintage is being horded.

I too am in FL, but all I've gotten are P's, no D's.

I'm in Northwest Florida (panhandle) and have not found any 2009-P or Ds from circulation yet. Got a circulated roll of P's on ebay but they were already well circulated and not really good enough to save. Still looking and hoping to find some. I went through a box of nickels from the Tampa area about two months ago and found one 2009-P (well used).

My trusty Red Book , 2012 has the following mintage figures: 2009P.............39,840,000 2009D.............46,800,000 This is a smaller production than the years immediately preceding and following which are in the 100' of millions...not sure what bearing this has on this discussion, just sayin'...

I have found only 14 total 2009's through 29.4 boxes searched. 7 Philly, 7 Denver. In those same boxes I have found 25 War Nickels. This is particularly interesting because I live just outside of Philadelphia.

I've searched 6 boxes of nickels so far and haven't found a single 2009.

In my roll searching, I've accumulated an entire tube of 2009-D, but only 2 2009-P. I'm in TX so the D mm is expected.
