I think it's the former due to the fact that the bar under cents shows no sign of being cracked, so I think the flaw was there before the coin was struck. Let me know your opinions please. 5 cents: 5c 1966 Obv c1 5c1970Obvc1 5c 1979 Obv c1 5c 1980 Obv c1 I'm not sure how many images I've put up here, but I just counted my Lamination / Planchet Flaw coins, and I have at least 136 all up. I have a sneaky suspicion that there's a heap I haven't found yet because I have a habit of putting things in safe places. One thing I've noticed as I've been doing this is that the majority of the flaws are on older coins. Not many after the 1990's really, so that leads me to ask; 1. Has the quality of the planchets improved? 2. Is there a different supplier of blanks? I might make a list of all the ones I have found and see what I can glean from it all. Not quite making a study of it though Sel.

Quote: Is there a different supplier of blanks? While I'm not sure, I thought that the mint used to make planchets. Also, I don't really look out for this sort of thing, so the only obvious lamination error I've seen is on a 2c piece where part of the surface had peeled back. Sure enough it was a pre-1990 coin.

http://www.australian-threepence.co...n-error.htmlFrom Wiki: Quote: Lamination: A lamination is a planchet defect (see definition of "Planchet" under "Terms") originating when a portion of the coin metal separates from itself due to impurities or internal stresses. Lamination flaws occur primarily when foreign materials or gas oxide become trapped within the planchet.

The Mint did used to make their own planchets from 1966. They now source them from a South Korean supplier Poongsan. Can't recall right now which year they stopped making the planchets themselves.

OZ apparently has some pretty crappy QC. I'd try to see if I could snap one of those twos.

Thanks for sharing Nancy! I have only found one planchet flaw so far. It is a 5c similar to the 1970 5c you have shown - like a row of gas bubbles was caught in the metal. My one is also an early coin, but I do not remember what year. That is quite a collection! How many did you find yourself?
