hey guys just wondering but I live in the surrey area of b.c ( that's Canada for some of you Americans) and I often go across the border. is it possible for me to go to some random bank and give them some us bills and ask for a box of half dollars and when I am done with the box just drop it off at the same bank

Yeah you can do that but it always helps to call ahead and ask if they have a box or ask if they can order you one in. Most banks dont usually have boxes of halves lying around.

Not all banks have boxes of half dollars (mine doesn't). If you drop them back at the same bank, they may be not too happy to get them back. And you normally need an account at a drop bank.

I would strongly recommend not buying a bunch of American halves if you don't have an account with an American bank. They very well may sell them to you without an account (though as noted above many banks don't keep halves in stock), but they are unlikely to take them back.

I have done it many times with half dollars and one dollar coins. I have never had any problems buying or returning without a bank account. Sometimes I get asked for a pictureID.

Is this something you plan to do on a regular basis? If not, it probably isn't worth the hassle.

And it depends upon the bank and best to ask. Worse case they require you to get an account. Just open one and put in the minimum amount. And then you can deposit the halves into your account. They would give you less of a hassle that way.

But first, make sure they can order halves for you.

It might even be better to have accounts at 2 different banks. One for buying them and one for returning them, so you get new ones each time.

There are more than enough banks. If one shoots you down, go to another - on both ends of the transaction.
