While examining a 1969 P&D set I had purchased for possible varieties, I came across what appears to be, quite frankly, a broken shield on the reverse of the Kennedy half dollar.

Has anyone seen this before? If so, what caused / may have caused this error. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

It looks like a strike through error. A small piece of metal or foreign object was on the die when the coin was struck and it left an indent on the coin.

How deep does it look? It looks a little deeper than the incuse part of the shield.

I am not sure if it is deeper, I will check as soon as I get a moment.

I was also wondering if it could be some kind of a 'lamination peel' or something like that?

Looks like a contact mark from another coin's reeded edge from what I can see.
Rest in Peace

OK, here is a picture from a slightly different angle. The anomaly looks to be about the same depth as the incuse areas of the shield.

This new picture reveals some other characteristics. I hope this helps...

It could be from contact with another coin, or it could be a strike through error (debris on the die when the coin was struck). Smaller strike-throughs like this, while technically errors, are not that uncommon and don't generally add value to the coin. They may be considered a flaw to someone looking for a gem. A large strike-through might be of interest to an error collector.

with captainfwiffo -- contact mark from a reeded edge. Pretty common damage, especially with a bigger, heavier coin dropping onto another
