When a TPG asks you to estimate the value of the coin what do you do?
How am I supposed to estimate the value if I don't know the grade any ways? If I knew that I wouldn't need them. Would you recommend that I turn to a coin appraisal (not a grading service) for this? There is one in Vancouver that has been around for many years (my parents used their services). I'm thinking of going there one of these days when I have time. What do you think?

Or shoud I just tell the TPG, "yeah it's face value. You figure out the rest".

I can't give you any advice on this, having never sent in a coin to a TPG. But it is something that I might do sometime soon, and I am also curious. Since some coins go from around $200 in value in AU-58 to $1,000 in MS-63, I can see how this would be a concern.

Estimating the value is for insurance purposes in case the coin gets lost in transit when the TPG returns the coin to you. I usually declare what I paid for the coin and maybe a little bit more.

You could always post the pics here in the Coin Grading Forum to get a rough idea of the grade before you send it in.
