There is often a lot of talk on this board about the better slabs for high grade coins. Let's switch it up a bit and say that I am looking for a key date coin, say a 1916-D Mercury dime in AG-3. Obviously a monkey can correctly grade this coin, so I wouldn't be particularly concerned about the grade, and the coin being authentic would be my main concern. What slabs do you trust for authenticity purposes? Would you still stick to PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG, or are there other companies that are trustworthy for this purpose? Thundercoin

I know alot of good thing's about PCGS and NGC and ANAC's is on the rise after their relocation. I do have an ICG but it appear's to be undergraded. For the budget ANAC's is the one. If you are fortunate enough to have a good income then go with PCGS....all other's just over look them....

For purposes of buying a key date in a slab, I'd feel quite comfortable with the authenticity of a coin in either a PCGS, NGC, ANACS or ICG holder.
I would be TOTALLY uncomfortable with any of the other so-called "grading" companies, therefore I would never buy one of their slabbed coins.

You have mentioned the only 4 I would trust with authentication, and I'd trust them all equally.

This will probably be the only time you ever hear me say that I agree with having a coin slabbed and which TPG to send it to. Authentication would be the only time and I would agree that you should stick with 4 mentioned also.

I think SEGS is under-rated. I would certainly trust them for authentication. Grading, I haven't made up my mind.
OTOH, since SEGS is not as well known, it would not instill confidence to a potential buyer, thereby rendering the whole thing useless anyway.

Thundercoin, I think PCI is trying to improve its reputation. That can be evidenced by the recent hiring of JT Stanton ( CherryPickers Guide author) as their variety attribution specialist. PCI has a long way to go but at least they are taking steps to put themselves in the spotlight for serious grading attention.

Yeah, I'd avoid them like the plague.

I have had only one experience with PCI. Several years ago I was obsessed with gold toned Buffalo nickels. My wife and I were dating she bought me an MS-60 PCI Buffalo nickel. The coin just didn't look right to me, it doesn't look like "gold toning" at all, it looks like the coin is gold plated, it's color is almost like a Sac dollar. With the overall lack of trust of PCI I wonder if this is the norm? Thundercoin
