I have a 1916 Mercury dime. It's really worn and I can almost swear there is a D by the rim. I can't tell for sure. How would I go about getting this coin graded or authenticated? Or is there someone here that I can send it to and have look at it?
Thanks,
Ty

Ironically, I was just getting ready to ask the same question. I have some older coins I'd like to get graded and slabbed. How do you go about submitting them? PCGS site lists a fee schedule. Is there a minimum? It looks like you have to submit 5 coins at one time x $16-$18.00 each. Is that correct?

Also, it looks like you have to be a member (at 100.00 a year fee) or a dealer. Can the average collector just submit one or two coins.

I've never had any of mine graded and slabbed before so the procedure is all new to me. From people I've talked to, I find out I'm not the only one that doesn't understand the whole process?

You do have to be a member to submit coins to PCGS. This I know. I think we have to find a dealer or collector that is a member and have them submit the coins for us. Maybe if we find someone, we can submit a group together and save some money. Who knows.

Both PCGS and NGC require memberships of one sort or another to submit; NGC's is the better deal in that you recoup your membership cost through free grading and a free coin. Both have minimum submission requirements, as well. I'm sure others will be along soon to bore you with the rest of the details.

Tykimeister, have you the ability to scan the coin at high resolution? If so, post a scan here and we'll see what we can see. I'll be happy to help with the process.

If you're only looking to submit a few coins then it might be best to consider ANACS or IGC. They don't require a membership fee. If you don't intend to submit more than 5 coins in a year then I don't see the point in paying a membership fee. Another option is to get a local dealer to submit for you, if you have one handy.

How much does it cost for a member to submit a coin to PCGS or NGC?

NGC allows you to submit coins via a dealer and no membership. I >think< PCGS is the same. Call a few dealers in town and ask. Also, if you are an ebay member you can submit coins directly to NGC with no membership. I recently joined the ANA, and I think(?) I read members can submit directly to NGC? Have to see if I have my membership pack and look that up. And you can submit directly to ANACS also with no membership.

I would show it to a couple of dealers beforehand. If it is not the coin you think, it sounds like it won't be worth your while to have it graded/authenticated.
