Poll Question
In your experience or knowledge which is the better company. I have some coins which I think were self-slabbed and I think they should be regraded but I don't know which of the 2 companies is best. Results

I voted with prejudice, as I got hosed by PCGS once, and in my world, once is enough.

After the First Strike and Early Release scams, I wouldn't send a toads wart to either PCGS or NGC to be looked at! If I absolutely had no other choice and had to have a coin slabbed then I would choose either ANACS or ICG.

I think the better one is the most consistent, and to tell you the truth it isn't the one thats more market acceptable for some reason

Why don't you take some good pictures of the coins and put them on the "Coin grading" forum. Let us have a look at them and see if it's worth the money to send them in.

Here's one of the coins. Look especially at the first photo. On the right side you can see a diagonal nick about 2mm (1/8th of inch long). Wouldn't that make it less than an MS68? I saw a similiar looking 1955S Lincoln that was graded MS66. Image: 1955SRDWHEATOBV.jpg101.34 KB Image: 1955SRDWHEATREV.jpg96.08 KB

You've answered your own question, I'm afraid.
I invite you to read some of the posts in the following forum: Third Party Grading Companies (TPG's)
My friendly advice is to crack the coin out of the plastic and put it in your album. I can't see how paying another company $30 to regrade your coin makes any sense at all.

I agree that a 1955 Lincoln Cent unless it was a double die 55 would really be worth the money to have graded. Of course I have had some coins graded that others probably thought didn't deserve to be encapsulated also for specific reasons or another so I shouldn't be one to give advice in this situation

After their relocation ANAC's is coming back pretty strong but for the actual overall best I will stake a claim with PCGS.

Please excuse a newbie question...
I have always "understood" that PCGS was most highly respected with NGC a close #2 (as poll shows)...
No other grading service was "supposed" to be close...
Does anyone besides SE prefer ANACS or ICG? If so why?
Also for bboudrot... Self slabbed? Are you saying you think the slabs are counterfeit?
For SuperDave... Can you describe your PCGS hosing?

In answer to the last post On the slab there is no TPG name like PCGS or NGC or even ones like SGS or WCG. I don't think they are counterfeit and it really doesn't matter just as long as the coins aren't.

I'll do it one better than describing, booyah - I'll picture it: Before: After: This was a nearly- or Condition Census VAM, and I paid strong money for it. Under the artificial toning was relatively fresh (within the last few years) abrasive cleaning.

Thanks for the responses bboudrot & SuperDave...
SuperDave's example is not one of PCGS's proudest moments. Most people (myself included) would have had no choice but to trust the grade given by PCGS.
I have heard many stories of people that were unsatisfied with a grade given to a coin, and would re-submit the same coin until they finally got the grade they wanted...
That doesn't inspire confidence in graded coins either...
Still this forum (though sample size is small) prefers PCGS over NGC 7 to 5 (and 1 write-in vote for ANACS/ICG).

Dave, did you try to contact PCGS about their guarantee as it relates to this error?
Your before & after pictures are not proof that it is the same coin, but it is compelling. I hope you have "before" pictures while still in the slab.
You never know, they may pay you off. Best of luck.
