I have no knowledge of a very pricey pure nickel or copper nickel coin, either at auction or in the retail market.
Are there any

There have been a few copper / bronze coins that have commanded big prices at auction, particularly U.S., British and European ones in high grade. The 1930 penny of Australia readily comes to mind.

I hand this question over to the CCF Panel of Expert Coin Enthusiasts.

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel (American) comes to mind - I believe its value is into the millions.

No, but I have an interest, and perhaps a few other collectors of World coins may have as well.

Sort of like asking on behalf of the Guiness Book of Records.

Not really. As a collector of World coins, it's just something that has been bugging me for a while now.

Hence the question to the CCF Panel of Expert Coin Enthusiasts.

Some other scarce cupronickel coins I can think of, or find browsing the Krauses... though they're not in the 1913 Liberty Head Nickel's league, but most, like the 1913 nickel, were coins that either never officially made it into circulation or were patterns:

- most of the so-called "nickel pattern pennies" of Australia are actually cupronickel. this bunch sold at Noble's for $42,000 each.
- in the Australian decimal series, the priciest might be the mint error 1981 scalloped 20 cents, estimated $1000.
- Japan 5 sen 1906 - one hasn't been seen on the market since 1991, when it sold for $10,000.
- Vichy France "Petain" 5 francs 1941
- Germany (Empire) 5 pfennig 1896 G and 1887 E star 20 pfennig.
- Germany (West) 50 pfennig 1950 G
- Korea 1/4 yang, KM 1117 any date except Year 2. Yet these are dwarfed by the Russian Korea 5 chon.
- New Guinea 1929 penny and halfpenny.
- Switzerland 1896 5 rappen.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Sel, if you're still interested, the 2008 Mule 20p had some pricey examples.

They changed the design and it came to be that the date swapped sides of the coin, but a run of dateless mules (old reverse new obverse) went through. Thousands and thousands made, but the press attention made them very valuable when they were first noticed and people werent sure how many there would be. Lots of pricey ones then. People started ifnding mint sealed bags of them and would sell them for £5 each and lower - then the mint offered £50 for the return of these mules for destruction. Price has risen since then.

Couldvehad one for £3 delivered once upon a time, but my UK stuff is built entirely from circulation so I passed...

SAP, you missed the German 10 pfennig coin 1892J, which is quite comparable to the 5 pfennig 1896G

I'm not sure where the rumours start!

The Royal Mint has never recalled the undated 20p.

Aren't there some 1945 or 1946 cupronickel florins too?
