I believe this is my first error. Purchased a $25 box and found some wheats. However this 1940-S was a part of my Grandfathers collection and I was chronologically sorting my new found wheat with my G-Pa's collection. I guarantee he did not know about this coins condition. That being said I plan to keep this forever, not only because it was my Grandfathers, but because it may very well be my very first error find. If you would like to take a look at the reverse of the coin on the upper portion of the wheat. There are two small "cracks" approaching this blob of what I believe is copper or an actual piece of the die. Are any of you familiar(s) able to concur with me about this Cud, and would this have premium value in numismatic terms? Thanks much. -Adam

Pretty big die chip. Very nice find. It doesn't add much value to the coin though. Maybe a few dollars.

A Cud is when it is a die chip and touches the edge of the coin. Minor details.

Not a Cud, just a die chip which can be frequently found on the wheat ears. It is quite possible that the die chip would have developed into a die break Cud with more strikes.

Obverse Cud:

A Cud involves rim of the die that has broken off.

Unless I'm seeing things, there appear to be fine die cracks extending from the internal break to the rim. So it might be considered a Retained Cud.

Not Retained Cud yet. The crack is just reaching the rim. But soon. The devices are still in alignment. The area in question has not started breaking off yet.

There are cracks extending to the brim. Very similar, I would say identical to this one here on ebay.

That is how this 1940-s looks up close also. This seller refers to it as a Retained Cud. I'll just stick with my first error penny.
