Is there any way to tell when a TPG graded coin (PCGS specifically) was graded and slabbed? That information is not available from the cert verification page. You can tell a rough idea by the style of slab, but I was hoping for something more specific (i.e. a month/year if not an exact date).

This information is not available from either PCGS nor NGC. The slab style is your best bet. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I have heard that the information is likely (almost certainly) stored in the internal databases of both PCGS and NGC. I've never tried giving them a call to ask if they would divulge such information.

It may be contained within the bar code label, I have been messing around with ANACS barcodes, there is a lot of info stored in the code on the slab, a lot more than on the paper insert label.

It more than likely is based on the serial number of the coin, I doubt any of the TPG's will release that info to the public.

You can get a pretty good idea as to the year(s) certain slab types were used. More info here: http://www.sampleslabs.com/pcgs.html

I tried to get dates from PCGS and that is "propriety info" they say. Beats me why! But they don't want that info out there. I tried on rattlers. That has to be stored on internal data base, The graders know when they graded a coin.

Well as to the rattlers PCGS used they would be 1986 through 1988 ( I think that was when they changed to the larger holder with the rim), but I'm not positive.

there is no way to tell exactly what date a coin was graded unless you get it from the one who submitted the coin because PCGS will not give the information out. You can tell a time frame it was done by the slab but that time frame could be years

The services do have the information in their databases exactly when a coin was slabbed but no they will not release that information. The reason, especially with PCGS, is because they wish to maintain the fiction that grading standards have never changed. The thought being that if you don't know when a coin was slabbed then you won't know if that was a tight or loose period, so in the meantime a 65 is a 65 is a 65. That was one of the things that got PCGS upset with me. I gave people a much better idea when a coin was slabbed.
