This is the best of my error finds for the week, iridescent toning on the milled areas makes it into best of the week category.

I think what you're seeing is the decal overlapping on the coin itself.

Good eye. I'll have to check the few I have for that.

The Olympic colourized quarters have a similar effect, especially on the men's hockey coin. It's sometimes very erratic and inconsistent.

Am I missing something? When I look at the coins in hand, I see the rainbow effect but it's because of the decal not toning.

My best guess is that the colouring is coming from an after effect of the painting process. The area that was milled was rough and provided a good surface for paint vapour toa adhere to. But this is only speculation.

Milled? It's struck. The decoration is a final stage.

Ikandiggit are you saying it's struck though the pattern?

No decals used, these coins were painted by inkjet similar to your computer printer
I believe what we see on the OP's coin is droplets of the clearcoat applied over the colour to make it last longer in circulation

Correct. I think this on my Poppys and BC quaters. Like DBM said its coated with something to keep the color while in circulation. I believe the color lasts about 3 years give or take.

@Ugly So is it consistent with other coins to show the striking around the inset? This is the 1st time I've taken a picture of this particular coin.

@DBM So far this sounds normal, as the other colourized coins from the previous posters indicate the same effect, I appreciate the help.

Clear-coat. Forgive me. I was always under the impression the printed image was applied like a decal. Thanks for correcting me.

I believe that is what Roger is looking at. It isn't the result of a strike but the edges of the applied clear-coat.

Speaking of iridescent, the clear coating will glow when put under a UV light.

@Scissle Very cool showing the black light images. Looking at the poppy yesterday the clear coat came up nicely in the light on the feild between the edges of the leaf.
