Once again, a bill has been brought up to try to cease the production of dollar bills.

http://moneyland.time.com/2012/02/0...dollar-coin/

Quote:
The U.S. government has a love/hate relationship with the $1 coin. At the same time as the U.S. Mint is scaling down production of the largely unwanted Presidential dollar coins, two U.S. senators are introducing legislation that would kill off the dollar bill completely and replace it with ... you guessed it: $1 coins.

This week, Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and John McCain (R-Ariz.), in a rare glimpse of bipartisan agreement, introduced legislation that would bring about the death of the dollar bill.

A few months back, the 12-member Joint Committee on Deficit Reduction (a.k.a. the "supercommittee" tasked with restoring the nation's financial footing) was reportedly considering a proposal that would phase out the dollar bill and replace it with a dollar coin. Nothing much was reported about the issue until this week.

On Tuesday, the two senators introduced the Currency Optimization, Innovation and National Savings, or COINS, Act. (Those legislators are oh-so clever with the acronyms!) It's similar to a House bill that has gone nowhere since last fall, and it would promote the very same Presidential dollar coin that is so unpopular that $1 billion worth of them are sitting unused in government vaults. Yes, the same dollar coin that was part of a program the Obama administration axed in December.

The reason Sens. Harkin and McCain are championing the dollar coin is because they believe it will save the federal government money in the long run, even more than is projected to be saved by axing the presidential coin program.

According to the U.S. Treasury, 40% of dollar coins are returned to the government. Those coins, along with a bunch of coins with presidents on them that we don't care about anymore, are just sitting in government vaults, unwanted and unused.

But the dream of the $1 coin keeps coming back, a currency zombie that won't die. And that's largely because the Government Accountability Office projects that replacing the dollar bill with a coin could save the government $5.5 billion over 30 years. Considering our serious debt and deficit problems, the idea still has currency with some lawmakers. (See, I can be clever, too.)

The legislators are essentially counting on the American people getting used to using a dollar coin, especially if there's no other choice. The Senate bill sets a four-year deadline to stop production of paper dollars.

Meanwhile, other legislators have written bills that would save bills. (Ok, I'm done.) Sens. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) and John Kerry (D-Mass.) have written the Currency Efficiency Act, which is aimed at stopping the overproduction of the "unpopular one dollar coin."

Considering how things have been going in Washington lately, this fight probably won't be resolved any time soon.

Just picked up two rolls of Presidential dollars from the Credit Union and people in other lines were asking for them as well.

Doing my part to keep them circulating!

1) When you see articles like this, be sure to send in polite corrections and notes to the reporter. I sent him a link to the US Mint 2011 report and noted that ending the dollar program actually cost money because minting them is profitable. I also mentioned that Sen. Brown and Sen. Kerry's interest in keeping the dollar bill probably has something to do with the paper company in Massachusetts.

2) Write your congressperson and senators and the senators and congressmen on the committees with jurisdiction. Or call them! Ask your senators to co-sponsor this bill (I don't know the bill number yet or the appropriate committee, but the information should appear on thomas.loc.gov soon).

3) Note the cost savings (reference current fights about deficits and where to save money), but also other benefits of coins like easier use in vending machines and their anti-microbial properties and the benefits to public health. Note the success and profitability of coin programs like the State Quarters.

Bingo cap'n.

The dollar coin is the best option; therefore, our politicians will never do the right thing first. :-P

They'll do what it takes to get re-elected. If they think their constituents will support the change, if it can make them look good, if they can improve their campaign coffers, they'll do it. The biggest hurdle in this fight is the American public. Politicians are a piece of cake.

I'd love to see this proposal go forward, although I'd personally prefer it if we kept the Presidential dollar coins NIFC and use the much more attractive Native American dollar coins instead. Interesting how the article made no mention of them (unless I missed it which isn't completely out of the question). I just wish I had any amount of faith left in our government that they might actually do the intelligent thing for once.

I'll always prefer to carry 10 to 20 single dollar bills for many reasons. No one I know likes nor uses those baby sized dollar coins. If I wanted to I could easy carry 100 single bills but 100 of thoss baby dollars? Not much of a chance.
I really think they sould start producing more $2 bills. Also, we need $3 bills since I hear so many people use them as an expression. Example is he is as ________ as a $3 bill.
So why not start making them? Or even $4, $6, $7 etc. bills. One for every number up to 100.

One complaint I don't get is.....I don't want the weight of twenty one dollar coins in my pocket...it is easier to carry 20 $1 bills.....guess what...it is even EASIER to carry ONE $20 bill. You can exchange them for larger paper notes, of which I truely feel it is time to re-issue the $500 bill

As for reasons to carry 20 $1 bills in your wallet...well....only one reason comes to mind, and well....my wife doesn't condone that one...lol

Why would you want to carry around 100 dollars worth of one dollar bills? That cannot fit in your wallet; 100 dollar coins won't fit in your pocket either, but does anybody think that people want to carry around that many dollar coins to begin with?

No we do not need a three dollar bill. If the dollar bill does cease, then I will agree that we need more two dollar bills. I don't even know why they make them to begin with.

If you are being serious, I have to politely disagree with this 100%.

These things make for nice press releases but really that's about all. I would be shocked if this bill goes anywhere. The short reason being that none of these senators are actually on the relevant committee, which I believe is Senate Banking. Any senator can propose legislation, but most never leave the originating committee. These senators know it as well. This way they can pretend to be doing something without actually doing anything. I guess I should also note Kerry and Brown also aren't on the relevant committee either and my comments apply to them as well.

Yup. This needs to be made more well known to the people who voted for these two idiots.

Which is why we need to make our representatives aware of it and how we feel about it.

"Hurray! By eliminating the $1 coin we're saving $50 million a year in storage costs! ... not to mention the $382.8 million we're going to lose in segniorage profits... or the $150 million per year over 30 years we would have saved further if we eliminated the $1 bill... but hey! That means we're only set to lose out on just under $500 million (a measly HALF BILLION DOLLARS) on average a year now!"

Nuts I tell you. Nuts.

What would happen to the adult entertainment industry if dollar bills were done away with? Oh, I shudder. Throwing coins doesn't seem very nice.
