I realize it's probably a losing venture, but I decided to send in a 1992 D Columbus Half Dollar for slabbing. It's 99% an MS-69- but I couldn't find anything on the coin at all. So here's to hoping I hit that 1 in a million bull's eye and get an MS-70 on this otherwise pedestrian commemorative coin.

Second on the list was a 2011 Medal of Honor Business Strike. This one is legitimately and MS-69, I'm hoping for no better.

The third item is a 1971-S Blue Pack Ike that will fall in the range of MS-67 to MS-68. Given that the 68 is a $12,000 coin, I'm almost sure it won't make that. But with my taxes being due soon, one can hope.

the remaining three coins are varieties:

I sent in a 1961 Washington Proof Quarter that is an FS-101. It has doubling under loupe in the motto. CPG does not give this variety a value- but there are fewer than 20 attributed by PCGS and none higher than PR-67. I think this coin is a PR-67 or a PR-68.

The second variety is a 1971-D Kennedy DDO. Naked eye pickup but clearer under 5x, this has strong doubling in the TRUST on the obverse.

and finally, a 1971-S Blue Pack Ike Peg Leg. are in Liberty is totally abraded, the left arm of T is abraded and the left arm of Y is abraded... this will be a good add to my registry set. The coin *might* make MS-65.

Of course, it'll be a month before I know anything. I hate to wait.

I would have taken pictures before submitting them...for insurance purposes, just in case.

...and to "show and tell" the CCF what you sent in.

First wave of results is in. And what a disaster!

The 1971-S that should have graded MS-67 comes back 99'ed for PVC. This coin looked pristine and was pulled out of OGP. So, I guess I'll have to look at it again and dip it. I hate dipping coins because I like natural surfaces... oh well.

As for the two modern commemoratives- both came back MS-69 as expected.

The turn around time for these three coins was 10 days- which is fast by PCGS standards. The second round will include the three varieties which I hope get properly attributed.

Why did you mail them in 2 separate submissions?

That is too bad on the Ike. Did you take it out of the OGP?

Was it in a proof set then? Does the plastic in the 1971 sets have PVC in them?

it was a super clean silver biz strike BLUE PACK ike. I cut it out of the OGP before I submitted. I probably should have dipped it first. Cheap lesson learned. I'll try to fix it up before sending it back. I had to split the submission into two- because the other three coins were all varieties.

Acetone will kill the PVC and not touch the luster, a dip in silver/tarnish remover like MS70 or Jewel Luster will strip the luster off faster than you can imagine if you don't have a lot of experience - DON'T do it.

Acetone is safe and you can let the coin soak for hours with no real ill effect, I wash/rinse mine in distilled water after.

@westcoin- thanks for the advice.

Turns out that PCGS messed up my submission anyway. I got the first three coins back today and they took my MS-65 FS-401 PEGLEG and graded it in this bunch. I got the coin back and its not really obvious that there is a coating on it. I'm going to restore it and send it back. This is definitely an MS-65 and a valuable variety so back it goes.

I have a wonderful 72-D Toner and some 76 Type 1s to send in as well.

Here's hoping my MS-67 or MS-68 71-S comes through for me!

Round two of my grades just popped up- although I can't tell if they attributed any of the varieties yet.

My 71-S that I hoped for 67 got an MS-66
My 71-D DDO Kennedy got MS-64 (not a loss if it did get the variety attribution)
My 61 Proof DDO got a PR-66 (it is toned- but 66 is probably right- again if the variety is attributed then its good).
