I'm curious as to what rate for finding War Nickels (WWII 35% silver, large mint symbol above Monticello 1942-45) would be considered good or average. I guess you can sort of say I want to compare find rates with other searchers . I tend to find one War Nickel per $16 of rolls, and I get $30-$40 dollars worth each time I search at $2 a roll, so about one in every 8 rolls yields one for me. I personally think that isn't too bad, what would you guys say your rate would be? Of course if you'd like to post your rates for other finds such as proofs and foreign coins (such as Canadians) your more than welcome to share that as well! Edited by Stutzman108 02/03/2012 8:14 pm

I usually find on average about 1 silver nickel per box of 50 rolls ($100). I don't keep the Canadians or proofs. Catch and release on those.

Stutzman - I assume your searching bank rolls? Customer wrapped rolls don't yield much for me. I seem to find Canadian nickels beat my War Nickels 4 or 5 to one up here along the Great Lakes.

I wish you'd asked that 10 yrs. ago. Pretty dismal these days here. Abit over 1 on avg; 4-6 in a superior box. If your getting one every 8 rolls, I wouldn't change a thing. Way to go!

The ones I get are straight from the bank, I try to avoid the ones customers have brought in because people tend to pluck out the good ones before bringing them back in. Oh and thanks Willy for that correction, it's been a while since I've looked into that lol.

You folks are way ahead of me in terms of War silver Jefferson find rates ... Quote:I tend to find one War Nickel per $16 of rolls Do not change a thing ... that is fabulous. I should move to wherever you are. Here is an honest comparison from a dedicated Jefferson roll searcher who has kept detailed statistics ... I have to date searched through 264,400 circulated Jefferson ... that's 132.2 boxes ... and have found a total of 89 War silver coins. Sooo ... if you do the math ... I find a War silver Jefferson on average every 74.3 rolls. I am finding about 2 per box, but that's a very small sample as I have only sorted about 5 boxes so far.

I've thought about sorting through nickels along with half dollars. Can anyone point me in the direction, or tell me, what key ones to look for? I don't want to look at each nickel for the smallest of errors. Just a general idea. I would appreciate it!
Thanks!

I usually average 1 per box. However, last year, I went through a stretch of 12 boxes without a single War Nickel. 1 in 8 rolls is a ridiculously great average.

That average is crazy. I've been skunked on my last 2 boxes. Nice to hear someone is having a good run.

About one per box. Pulled an ugly one this weekend.
