Hello all,

My first post here after being a longtime lurker.

Here's the deal -

I know nothing absolutely of Chinese coinage and I'm hoping that someone might know a bit more then myself. What I have found out so far...

Tang Chi-Yao, Yunnan province. Likely early 20th century. 1917 - 1930's. 50 cent or 20 cent, roughly 38mm in diameter. Brass or Copper. Pretty sure that it's not silver. Doesn't have the "ping."

Link I found to a live auction... Close items here but no my coin.

It looks like it had been in the dirt for sometime, a buddy gave this to me when he moved out awhile back. I thought it was a cool token of some sorts and had have never researched it until now. Any thoughts or experts?

I posted this initially over at reddit.com and was referred to here by the moderator for help.

Here is the original posting...

Your coin is Yunnan 50 cash, No date but made around 1920. Not the most common coin, though not particularly scarce. It seems legitimate, though the bust looks perhaps a little off, I think its just the scan.

In a better condition that could be 3rd party graded, it can fetch a decent amount of money, though in this condition it wouldn't worth a huge amount. If you would like advice regards selling the piece, just let me know i'll be happy to help.

Thanks for the response and the welcome!

What's most perplexing about this piece is the flag and mustache, and in particular, the variety of them. I have yet to find one that exactly matches. I'm under the assumption that there were probably some variations in the strike. As far as authenticity, I have no idea. It was given to me by a friend who knew that I was a collector.

No plans to sell, I like a well-rounded collection, just a bit more spice to it I suppose.

I've seen the costs range from $600 to $15,000 for this type of coin. I would like to narrow the scope so that I know exactly what I have. Obviously subjective... depending on the usual range of factors.

It's a really cool piece though and the price was just right!
