I've picked up a few mint sets recently and have found a couple errors I thought I'd share. Sorry for the poor pictures, it's difficult to take them through the mint packaging. The first is a strike-through error on the reverse of a satin-finish 2010 Lincoln Presidential dollar. The second is a very weakly struck 2004-P Wisconsin quarter. The marks you see aren't contact marks - they're roughness on the planchet from before it was struck. The debris you see is inside the packaging, however. In neither case was I aware of the errors when I got the sets - they were sealed.

The Dollar is a struck through error. (Wire)

I think the quarter is a weak strike rather than Struck Through Grease, because it's on both sides, the weak areas are all around the periphery of the coin and it shows so much planchet roughness.

You said you picked up a couple sets. Is that the same 25c? Struck Through Grease obv. & weak strike rev?

Yes - the couple of sets were the 2010 set (the struck through wire dollar) and a 2004 (the weak strike quarter). All four quarter pictures are the same coin.

Weak strikes tend to be weakest at the center, i.e. the area of the design with the highest relief. I would concur with the coin being Struck Through Grease. Grease will tend to leave the planchet roughness intact as well. I like the Lincoln struck through wire

The irony is that I wanted these mint sets as nice pristine sets to put away so I could put the satin finish era out of mind. Included the 2004 so that I wouldn't have a series of mint sets with only half the Westward Journey nickels. I like finding errors, but I think I need to get new mint sets to have intact ones to put away. I'm also irritated at again finding so much debris inside the government packaging. QC much?

Mint sets can be in good condition without marks or in bad condition with a lot of contact marks or worn out dies. It's kind of the luck of the draw. Best to get a roll of OBW rolls and pick the best there.

You can't get the 2005-2010 satin finish versions from bank rolls. I was trying to ignore the whole subject of satin finish mint sets, but the throwback composition of the 2009 cents eventually broke down my will.

Thelionwarrior, it looks like your example was Struck Through Wire.
Errers and Varietys.
