how much deviation do you see in minted coins of the same denomination?

i have weighed some early commemorative halves that I bought over the weekend and I am seeing a good deal of fluctuation, from coins that were all supposed to be minted at 12.5 grams.

ranging from 12.49, to as low as 11.4, on clean looking, coins that I would say grade 45-55.

also I weighed some clad Kennedy halves and they seem to be in the 11.2 gram range.

i am a novice collector and this is the first time I got out a scale to weigh any coins.

12.5 grams is the nominal weight for 90% silver U.S. half dollars. 40% silver and clad halves will weigh less.

90% silver commem halves should not weigh 11.4 grams in XF/AU condition. That low a weight should only be observed when wear has taken them down to AG/G condition.

24 grains to the dwt, 480 to the troy oz.

Never weigh coins in grams, it's just confusion.

Several things to remember.
1. Make sure your scale is accurate. By that I mean always check it with something you know the weight of for sure first. Sometimes moving sensitive scales to a new location makes them work different
2. Try using pounds instead since in you'll find much, much less differences.
3. Since your mentioning commemoratives, shouldn't be a difference from wear. So as already noted might be just the + or - tolerances.
4. Possible some are counterfeits?

Ppl confuse accuracy and precision.

Accuracy = how consistently items are weighed against a known standard.

Precision = how small a difference in weight the scale can detect.

Precision is useless without accuracy.
