Hi All,

Please could I have some help with this coin. It was recovered from the dunes of De Panne beach, belgium with a lot of WW2 British relics from the battle of france evacuation in 1940 but I think it might be older.

Many Thanks,

Simon

Oh it is older, a hammared coin, if you could put what lettering there is down, it might make it easier.

Simon.

It is surely way older than 1940. But probably not old enough to be a hammered coin. I believe it could be 17-18th century as it is separated like a ``piece of eight`` Spanish coin of that time or Spanish ``bits``. On the second photo, it seems like the bottom of a bust figure, so it could likely be Spanish, British, French, etc.

It looks like a 17th century liard from the Spanish (Southern) Netherlands. I cannot make out the period, but the shield could be that of the Archdukes Albert and Isabella. I can read .UST DU. (ARCH AUST DUX BURG)on the second picture.

Hi Guys,

Apologies to be late coming back to you. Thank you all so much for your input. I have looked up some photos of the coin Bart suggested (the Liard) and agree that it looks just like that. Great detective work.

Any idea of scarcity of this coin/value? When you have more than half of it of course! Just out of curiosity...

Thanks again,

Simon
