The Chinese text reads:

China Ninety-five years

Add 95 years to the year that Taiwan dates its founding, Jan. 1, 1912, and you get 2007.
Cajunlady0, that Chinese Calendar might be the reason why we are different by one year.
Can you it explain to me?

Same misconception many people have about a turn of a century/millennium.

1912 was the Republic of China (which wasn't based in Taiwan yet) 1st year, not 0th (can I say that?). So, to determine AD date for the nth year it would be 1912 + n - 1. I'm with the Lady on this one.

I just plugged in those characters in my "Taiwan calculator converter" program and came up with the year 2006.

I love that thing! http://dateconverter.net/minguo/?hl=en

It helps me with all my foreign coins that do not have the year written in something I understand.
