Here is an 1874-S Trade dollar I purchased locally. I would like an opinion on the grade. Thank you!

Not sure on the grade, but definitely looks cleaned. It also appears to have been polished.

The lady I bought the coin from had it wrapped in some kind of 'silk' and inside of a little, velour draw-string bag. Any thoughts on the overall condition?

Why isn't anyone responding to this thread? Usually I have no problem with folks offering their thoughts...

From the photos, it looks like it is was a high AU coin that was polished or whizzed to make it look uncirculated.

I would say AU-58 details. Harshly cleaned and polished as to try and pass it off as mint state.

I will have to disagree... I can't see anything on the devices that would indicate polishing, much less cleaning. The Lady was easily in her 70's and she remarked about receiving the coin from her mother.

So what do you think caused all of the hairline scratches all throughout the fields? I didn't grade it before and started to not respond at all because I feared you would take offense to my opinion, based on the way you worded your original post. We can agree to disagree. but to me without a doubt the coin has been polished.

What is 'whizzing'?

Whatever everyone is seeing may be the results of my bad photography? I will try to take better pictures.

4 out of 4 responses think it looks cleaned. Hmmm...odd! It is a very nice coin. But, it has issues whether you want to believe it or not.

Bad photography cannot create all of those hairlines, only make them appear more pronounced. Regardless it is a nice coin, and appears to be genuine.

My guess from the photos is polished making it AU or impaired proof, making it worth a lot more money but still polished. It's the overall look of the coin that screams polished or buffed. Generally only coins that are proof or buffed with a jewelers polishing wheel have this look. IMO.

The mint did not make 1874-S dollars in proof so I'm sticking with polished.

Both sets of pictures clearly show evidence of cleaning. Like was said above, it is still a very nice coin even with the issues it has. As long as you didn't pay a lot for it I'd be happy with it. It should still fetch somewhere around$ 350.00-$400.00 with the cleaning.

This is very disappointing.
No, I didn't pay a lot for the coin ($150). I purchased it with the intention of listing it in our eCrater store. I just don't want to misrepresent the coin and I needed to know an appx. value so someone would buy the coin.

I wouldn't pay over $200.00 for a coin like this but at $150.00 you did okay. Polished coins are always harder to sell in my experience, collectors want coins without problems if possible. I'd price it at $225.00 to be fair and list it as cleaned. You'll still do okay at that.
