I saw this on the bay and thought it looked suspicious even before reading the seller's description. so, fake or real? pics are the seller pics, and were not modified. text from the auction, verbatim. this is what I believe the coin dealer it weigh said 3.8 grams and all I can go by its authentic is the coin dealer said it looks like it is real. this is all I know about the coin it looks like when is was hit is mite of used more metal than it should have whene I match it up to a Indian Head penny the one i have is a little bigger in size I can see this happening you know it is a die error anything can happen that what i think. why would someone go throw the trouble to make this coin and than wrap it in a old coin wheat roll. don't make sence to me. I really think it is real. Edited by robbudo 02/08/2012 08:03 am

I don't like it.
And 3.8 grams? That is more than a half a gram over the maximum legal tolerance.

Date numbers looks wrong too especially the "18" Some one had a lot of time to make this. I think it's fake too.

Run away as quickly as you can! I just compared this coin to the "Longacre's Ledger" on off-center IHCs. A counterfeit 1866 OC is shown there that looks remarkably close to this coin. As noted, the weight is totally wrong. Then, look at the rims of the planchet. IHC off-center planchets don't have that wire rim. The denticles and die shoulder looks wrong too.

I share the same concerns as the other posters. The first thing that caught my eye was the date and that does not look like the correct style.

...neat RMO (round metallic object) none the less. I am a newbie when it comes to errors though.

i had worked out a deal with the seller that I could send it off to ANACS and had full return privileges if they found it fake. I was mostly interested in figuring it out and documenting the fake. Anyhow, someone outbid me. They're stuck with a lemon.
