I've decided to spend a couple months of my coin budget on a digital point and shoot. Unless you have undeniable proof that going over $100 will have a very large return on investment that's all I want to spend.

Some information...The last picture I took that wasn't on my iPhone was on a disposable camera. My lighting setup is one 100W incandescent on a lamp that's attached with an adjustable coil. My day job involves detail drawings and heavy 3D modeling -- any software post-processing will be easy for me to pick up and apply. I love researching and testing.

I think something with lots of manual control and good documentation would be best. I've read Dave's "Project A720" thread from 2008 which gave me a good idea on what to research on my path to choosing the correct camera, but I thought some of you may have advice as well.

Don't hate on my current lighting setup; I know upgrades in that department will be helpful. I'm trying to not waste too much money while dipping my toes in the water.

160 views and no responses. Bummer.

I burned through my research pretty quickly and landed on the Canon SX130. We'll see how things go. :)

I shot on a very small budget of $200 for about the first year that I did coin photography. That money was spent on a Canon SD1400IS (~$140) and a copy stand (~$60). I did read your post, but was leery of giving advice as I don't know which of the older possibly 8MP or so cameras would be good for this purpose and could be had for around $80-100. I wish you the best! And, please, post pictures here! We are all happy to help you -- my problem was that I didn't have much to suggest in the $100 range.

Will likely pull the trigger tomorrow. Target dropped the SX130IS price to $99.99. It says it's on back order but for that price and from a reliable store waiting won't be that bad.

Any last minute suggestions? Planning on the putting in the order tomorrow.

I use an Olympus UZ500, not sure if they make this model any more.
Excellent picture quality and easy to use.
Whatever you get, be sure it has macro capabilities.

An SX130 for $99? Oh, heck yes. My ex has one, and it's a very capable little camera. Didn't know they could be had that cheap. I'm going to buy one at that price, if it's any indication.

I suspect everything I did with the A720 will be relevant to you, and I'd expect similar results.
