Another thread got me to thinking back how when I was a little kid, I had the idea that stores wouldn't take dirty pennies so I would throw them away.
They had to be shiny or that dull copper color, with no gunk on them, no major damage, no corrosion. Otherwise I felt like I got ripped off and would toss them right in the trashcan.
I remember going to buy candy as a kid and asking the clerk for different pennies here and there if they were ugly. They must have thought I was just a fussy little kid.
Did you have any weird ideas about coins?

not really but my sister didn't think coins were real money only paper money was real so she would always give me all her change, I just loved it when she had a pocket full of quarters. Man it was great being her big brother back then, the things I could make her believe

... and I remember a coin show from 20 years ago or more ... I came away with a 1935 Canadian dollar for USD 25 and a US Large Cent from the bargin bin at USD 0.25! I still love both of them.

Used to wonder why the tooth fairy didn't have any coins with a tooth shown on them.

When I was young -- or so the eldest members of my family have reported -- I at one point wanted to toss some coins into a fountain. My grandfather (the last great numismatist in our family; may he rest in peace) obliged and pulled out some shiny, brand new pennies from his pocket.
Upon giving them to me I apparently noticed the shine and exclaimed, "Oh no! These are keepers!"... and put them promptly into my own pocket... :-)

When I first started collecting, I thought I could go to the bank and ask for coins by date; specifically asking for the new releases.

When I was very young I knew what a cent was, and the nickel was five cents. I used to wonder how they managed to squeeze five cents into that thing. Sure it was bigger in diameter but not that much thicker.

I used to think that only Mercury dimes were worth saving because they were silver, even though roosevelts were too, and I knew that, but for some reason didnt think they were worth anything more...prolly because they still use the same design

My kids (12 and 8) have absolutely no interest in coins. As a matter of fact they only want paper money. My boy won a Kennedy half and '37d buffalo in a school contest, and promptly "discarded" them. His sister nabbed them and she had good intentions on spending the buffalo before I rescued it.

My uncle used to throw away pennies. That's irksome to me, to think of all the wheat backs he probably pitched.
