Today a coworker showed me the "Weird looking penny" he recently got in change. I've never collected or even looked very deep into errors but I knew he had something. "Brockage" came to mind but with a little research it looks like his cent would be described as a "Full Mirror Brockage". He let me bring it home for a closer look and to photograph. The date seems to show through even though no other obverse details seem to. It looks like 1980 to me. It weighs in at the regulation 3.11 grams on my scale. I would appreciate any comments or insights into this kind of error. I think his plans are to list it on ebay sometime soon.

It's a mid-stage brockage and a very complex one. It looks like the die cap that generated the brockage was indented in two adjoining areas (perhaps simultaneously). This appears to have distorted the raised design on the working face of the die cap and pushed these areas inward. The result on the coin is that this part of the brockage is distorted and elevated. A very neat and very unusual error.

Sorry, John1, I don't have a clue. The owner is considering putting it on ebay and if/when he does I will post a link here. I am curious myself to see what it would fetch.

Nice error. Going off of Mike's comment, it seems that there were Two Cent planchets that indented the cap at the same time not only further distorting the original brockage but creating a chain strike effect.

My coworker that owns this coin just couldn't get around to listing it on ebay so he gave that job to me. I just listed it today. In a previous post I said I would post a link to the coin but I am not sure of the rules for linking to an ebay item that you are selling so I won't put on a direct link. I am sure anyone interested will be able to find it though.

14ers,
you can feel free to post an ebay link, members can get their own ebay feed after 100 posts so you more than qualify to post a link.

p.s. your name is curious, are you from the Centennial State?

Coop: That is it! Thanks for the link!

Biokemist6: Nope. I'm in the flat state to the east of there. I make an annual pilgrimage or two there to visit a few of my favorite landmarks... 14'ers. Are you a native out there?

I have never lived there but do consider it a "second home" since my grandparents used to live in Colorado Springs so I have spent many summers out there.

As for the auction,
