I've been loooking to go back and put a collection of Statehood Quarters together and noticed that the 2008 series is one of the most expensive to buy if you can find them.

What gives?

What so special?
Rest in Peace

Beats me. I suppose the price is always set by whatever the demand is -- so maybe everybody is trying to buy that year right now. I'm trying to get a complete set of proof silver State Quarters and it's really giving me a headache. I can't even find out what, if anything, is available.

Maybe everybody is hoarding them hoping the prices go way up.

I'm just trying not to get too nuts about it -- but it is frustrating.

I think if you check the 2008 proof set actually has the lowest mintage of all the State Quarter proof sets (1999 - 2008)

Condor is correct, the 2008 proof set is the lowest of the 1999-2008 run. Hawaii has been the key of clad proofs for the last few years, but has come down in price relative to the silver proof set. How modern sets and coins inflate in value is a couple of large dealers buy massive quantities, promote them like heck after they go off of sale at the Mint. This generates a lot of buzz in the numismatic community as a "rare" item and keeps the prices artificially high. At 2M+ sets these are not scarce or rare relative to other recent proof sets, will probably come down in price even further as more sets are unloaded by these hoarders. Right now, the clad proofs are taking a backseat to the silver proof sets and are somewhat unpopular.
