Welcome to the forum bald eagle.
I wish it were possibly to have a larger image to look at.

Hi bald eagle
Have you tried picking the cent up with a magnet ?
It is morethan likely either a foregn plachet or a normal 55 has been plated with another metal.
But I will wait to hear about the magnet !!

My first feeling on this is that the 1955 was dipped or coated in some chemical that changed the color. There is still a slight goldish cast to it.

Yup, looks scrubbed or plated. I would very highly doubt it's an error. Weight would tell that, it should weigh in at 3.1 grams or slightly over if plated.
