Yeah, it finally happened. For my first time ever, I received a 1 oz t silver coin that didn't weigh at least it's published weight. My experience to date with ASE's and Maple's had lead me to expect coins that come close to slightly over the published coin weight. This time, however, I got adventurous and bought something new, outside my experience and comfort zone. To my credit, I did buy from a well known metals dealer. So, here's the question: when is a bullion coin too light (or heavy) and worthy of concern?

The coin is a silver Britannia: my weight is 32.36g and published weight is 32.454g. Obviously, this Britannia weighs more than one troy ounce since the coin is a silver and copper alloy that is said to contain 1 troy ounce of pure silver.

That little bit of differnce would not concern me. If you are worried about a fake (and nice as Britannia's are, no reason for crooks to NOT fake them), give it the ol magnet test, if it sticks like glue and nearlly yanks the magnet out of your hand, well then Houston it will be official, we have a problem.... Not too jump tracks too far, but ever notice every time things get bad in the economy, the first thing the gov looks to cut, is the SPACE PROGRAM , so typical man I hate politicans. If it were up to me I would freeze them and lauch them into space, he he he lol. Goodness forbid some poor unknowing exploring race from another planet, stumble apon them an un-freeze them. I would rather have found Kahn and Cetti Alpha five floating around out there, then those crooks, lol. Maybe superman's old man Jor El could stick them in one of those big mirror's and lauch them into space....

Thanks, Silverhawk74. Agreed. The weight discrepancy is minor but I'll go ahead and try the magnet test just for peace of mind. I'll post a followup if there's a problem. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the silver Britannia.
Heh. Too true on the space program comment. But I try not to hate anyone. As a taxpayer, I prefer to think of politicians as really unreliable contractors: you try to keep the good ones while wishing the others go find another line of work!

Yeah I don't really hate anyone either, I just used that term a bit to loosely, lol. Like Costanza's old gym coach, I Can't-standz-ya would be more of an accurate adjective for all 500 plus of those snake oil hustlers, lol....
I would also suggest to keep adding Britannia's as that is an amazing always changing design. And they increase in value fast. Just try an buy a gilded set or something or even just one gilded Britannia, 125 is about the lowest you would find today gilded in gold. Better get out the big gun debit cards to acquire one of those sets....

Quote: give it the ol magnet test Has anyone ever made a ring out of a magnet from a junk hard drive? That would be an interesting and useful piece of jewelry.
