The 25th Anniversary ASE set contains 5 coins with a current silver value of around $167 (33.50/ounce). Because they came directly from the mint in nice packaging and included a proof coin, a reverse proof and a "S" bullion coin not found elsewhere, they sold for $299 per set. And now, in the aftermarket, originals sets in the OGP seem to be selling for around $600.

I'm just wondering, though, how much of the set's value is tied to the price of silver. If, say, the price of silver dropped back down to $10/ounce (thereby reducing the pure silver value of the set to only $50), would the value of the sets to collectors drop a well or would they retain their value as collectible coins? Similarly, if the price of silver soared to $100/ounce (making the silver value of the set $500), would the value to collectors jump significantly or remain where it is since it's already trading well above the silver value?

I know there's no way of knowing for sure, but I'd love to hear what people think based on their past experiences with "collectible" coins that just so happen to be made out of silver or gold.

If the bottom was to fall out of the metals market I think you would see a corresponding move against these sets as well. A lot of people that never gave silver a second thought jumped on the bandwagon as silver surpassed the $20 mark. At $10-$12 per ounce I could buy ASE's at local auctions for $6-$8 with no problem. Now with high bullion prices I see them go for as much as 2.5 X melt. A metals market crash would lead to panic selling thus flooding the market and driving down prices even more as well as interest in these and other sets I think.

I would like to find a set in OGP for $600 as all I have seen is $700+ range. I want to get a set in OGP sometime but I still want to see if prices will drop more as interest in them goes away, or if they are at that point now.

I really doubt that even if the metals market went back down to $4.00 an ounce these sets would ever sell for much less than they would at 33.00 an ounce. Even though they have metal value I don't think they are tied to the metals market that much at all because they also have collector value and its worth more than the metal they are made of. Now if the metal goes over $100 an ounce you would see a rise in the price but I really don't see it dropping all that much because of the bottom falling out of the metals market

interesting question, I've thought about this too in terms of 'how much' will the set go up when silver rises in price again. no good guesses from me though

I think there is some connection to pm value with these sets. However probably not very much. I doubt many will liquidate the sets if silver goes down. If they did I suspect there will a lot of people who will be happy to pick them up.

The A25 set will always have a numismatic premium, even if silver crashes. The bullion coin might be the only one in set that's tied to the market, even if graded with the proper labeling. The two unique coins will always drive the price of the set. With the 75th Anniversary (of the SF Mint) set this year, it might drive the A25 sets higher as more collectors have an opportunity to own the 75th, and in the process discover the scarcity of the earlier set. $600 seems to be the baseline for an opened set in OGP, assuming the set is assembled from the remaining coins from cherry picking the 70s to be sent in for grading.

I would be the first one trying to cherry pick them off ebay or Craglist, if the market crashed, and they were trying to ditch them.

That being said, I would have to agree with the poster above; they bought them for collecting, and not investing.

I still want to see a set for $600 that everyone is talking about. $720-750 seems to be the average low on ebay.

I think the ones saying 600 hasn't looked at them in awhile. I believe it had dropped down to the 600 mark the last time I looked (until a few days ago) and everyone was thinking that would probably be where it settled at after the frenzy. That is why I was surprised when I looked the other day to see they had gone back up a 100 or so dollars even for opened OGP sets
