Ok, so I have been collecting proof coins and as I go back in years the packaging starts to get less desirable. I actually do like the newer packaging, but I plan on liberating the ones that come in the flat packs.

The question I have is, should I crack all of my proofs out? The hard plastic ones all display nicely in my cabinet, but I would like to avoid any hazing issues from the packaging, and I don't want the flat pack proofs to get scuffed up sliding around in the packaging.

Maybe I should just leave them in the hard plastic and cut the flat packs open and encapsulate those coins?

Set them free! Thats what I do with all my proof coins. especially if there is a chance of the packaging scratching or toning the coins.

A long, long time ago I started to put my Proof and Uncirc sets in boxes as soon as I got them from the Mint. Eventually the box got full. Started a second, then third, etc box. One day I said to myself, SELF, take them all out of the original packages to conserve space. Then I said to myself, SELLF, take most of them and break out some of them for Albums. Still have way to many boxes of them but a lot less room used for them.

Agreed, liberate them if you can. The flat packs cellophane definitely wasn't archival to begin with, and I have seen some that definitely have a yellowish tinge to them. Most of the coins still look OK with decent mirrors and mild hazing, but definitely not the highly desired bullseye toning. The plastic cases in the later sets are relatively inert, it's the insert that may tone the proofs that you should be concerned about. Starting with the State Quarters, the insert was made of the same material as in the Air-Tite rings, though it was the filler material between two pieces of printed cardboard. In 2010, the Mint went to a Coinedge plastic insert for all the coins, not just the golden dollars.

Personally, I keep one proof set intact and free the others that go into Danscos or Air-Tite capsules which then are rolled into plastic tubes.

I think I will break em all out then. I will buy duplicates to keep in the OGP stashed away (probably silver proofs) and bust the rest out. I have been using Kointain capsules for my coins and like this a lot. I think they will look much better in them.

I will probably leave my brown box and blue Ike's in the OGP along with all of my prestige premiere and legacy sets. Those I like, even though I do have a couple coins in prestige sets getting some toning.

I'm glad I started freeing these. Some of them even in the 2000's were beginning to haze over on the edges.

Most of my proofs have been freed from their OGP and placed in my Dansco albums (there are a few exceptions for sentimental reasons). The albums are no worse than the OGP; neither one is air tight, so where they are kept is critical (low humidity, stable temperature).

I feel you made a good choice, especially if the coins are more enjoyable now.
