I have the below coin and I am new to grading. Can anyone advise on what I should be looking for when grading? I am a bit confused on the descriptors and would like to learn. Also, am I taking my photos correctly? I am new to coin photography and just have a small Nikon Coolpix with macro. Thanks in advance for any help.

ok this is a 1883 No Cents version and I can't tell if its circulated a little or if it is a weak strike. If it has been circulated I would say it is an AU-55 and if it hasn't I would say somewhere around MS-61 to MS-62. I think your photographs are fine and the only thing I would suggest is to crop out the boarder around it to include the coin only in the picture but even as is they are big enough to be able to judge what the coin looks like

Thank you for your help Bryan1315. Can I ask how you would tell if it has been circulated? I have had this coin for about twenty years. It was in a cardboard/mylar protector.

I removed all of my coins from the cardboards when I discovered a Braided Hair large cent of mine had some corrosion due to some kind of chemical reaction. I think whoever packaged might have had some type of chemical or salts on their hands.

Thank you again,

Tammy

Your pix are passable, use http://www.irfanview.com to crop and sharpen.

I'd say xf, a fairly common condition, since ppl snatched these up soon after they were made.

I think its around a AU-50. There looks like there is some wear in the hair under LIB in liberty. The luster is disturbed with some of it remaining around the date, stars and the lettering.
