How about DSI insurance? How about U-pic insurance? Both of which are paid monthly by the shipper and forbid you to mark "insured" on the package. They both integrate directly into Dazzle software which prints the USPS postage and keeps a separate log of what you owe for insurance. Better than 75% of ebay sellers I know use them because they're half the price and pay claims a whole lot faster.

Sellers can also self-insure. Most states it's perfectly legal to self-insure without a license. You can insure your own shipments just not someone elses'.

You know anybody knows that USPS isurance is not the only game in town.

But if your just buying from the average Joe, like I usually do, I would come to think they purchase insurence through USPS. I notice many of the items I pay for insurenc don't appear to be insured. But bobby's probably right.

The one thing you really have to remember is self-insurance. It's perfectly legal in probably 40 of the 50 states. Just because they didn't pay someone else to insure it, doesn't mean it isn't insured.

Bottom line is, it's only not insured if you don't get it and you don't get reimbursed.

Little known fact anyway, the seller is responsible to get it to you or refund you, by law, whether you pay for insurance or not.

Bobby,
So what do you do if you don't insure the item and the seller doesn't get the item to you? By law, hes still liable, though I have a good feeling he would agree. But what can be done if this happens?

Well, you can report him to ebay as a non-performing seller or in an extreme case there's always court, if it's worth it.

Any sellers' ridiculous statement about "Not responsible for.. blah blah blah ..." won't stand a chance against the Federal FTC 30-day law.

When I buy anything on ebay, I pay via paypal, and use a credit card. In that scenario, paypal will attempt to refund you if the item doesn't arrive. If the item were damaged, you can file a item significantly not as described claim.

If the seller skipped with the money, or paypal denied your claim, you still have the option of asking your credit card provider to do a charge-back. It's the only way I'll buy on line, unless I know the seller.

I found out the hard way about insurance. I sold a couple of proof sets to an eBayer. At the time I only had insurance as an option and the buyer chose not to take it. 15 Days after I shipped the items I get a message to tell me they had not arrived and I was obligated to replace or refund. I don't know if it was scam or real and emailed back and forth a few times but in the end ebay safeharbour told me I had to refund. I now require insurance on all my sales. If the item is over $25 I add delivery confirmation myself just to be sure.
Thakyou Dad for the links to private insurers. Its worth looking into as I always think that big insurance stamp the USPS use on a package is an open invitation...

U-pic just instituted a $20 minimum. We always spent $20, but just on principal we switched to DSI. They've been terrific.
