When editing the photos for the 27 Days of Mercury dimes thread, I realized the '44-D in my album is a very nice RPM. I'm considering selling it to help me fill in other holes in my basic set as RPMs don't excite me that much. It's a nice pretty example with typically great luster for the date, but I wanted to get others' opinion on grade to see if it might worth flipping.   Here's a couple close-up of the bands from a couple different lighting angles. If it was a usually poorly struck date, I think it'd be a shoe-in for FB, but it's a close call for '44-D... That must have been a nice surprise! You should sell it if you don't collect RPM's and you can replace that coin and add some cash to you coin bankroll!

Looks like a MS66 or have a shot at 67. Almost FB!
I think on the bay should fetch you around $75-90, if it was PCGS slab with 67, you may possibly have the highest RPM-3? Price wise?

I was thinking 65, but I'm always conservative. But I do have several slabbed 66 Mercs, and it compares with any of them. Honestly, I think it would be FB if it didn't have that little "D" on the back, but it's probably too borderline for a '44-D. A little Googling suggests there are at least three FS-501/RPM-3 in PCGS MS67FB. One sold on Heritage last March for $276, and one sold on ebay two days ago (!) for $285 with a CAC beanie. Mine appears to be an earlier die state compared to those two. It's funny, I don't even remember where I got it! I know I did not buy it as an RPM or an exceptionally high-grade example (i.e. I didn't pay MS66 money). Edited by CaptainFwiffo

Before I looked at the replies I was thinking 66. It's nearly as nice as a pcgs slabbed 67 I have.

MS-65+ or * not quiite a FB but so close, IMO.

I would spring the bucks and go have it slab with those bands, if it comes back even with MS-66 you can be sure that you can get over $100 with that designation, more with FB. If it comes back with 67, you are ahead of the game. This is a gamble of course, I am sure that sellers on ebay have to sell within certain prices to cover the cost of fees (eBay, Paypal, shipping and insurance, regular cost of slab fee and additional cost of varieties designation fee). With all those fees, and what was your original cost added, you may only earn 30-45% of profit you can really take with you for those lower varieties coins. |

I have to find a dealer that will submit it to PCGS (the local deal I usually go to does not), or find four other coins that are worth submitting to NGC. And there's every chance it might come back as 65 not FB, which is a nothing coin. I mean, if it comes back 67FB it's pop 4, zero finer, but I might just be flushing money playing games.

An MS64FB just sold on ebay for $143... I still don't have any means to submit it to PCGS.  Does anyone know if re-holders count toward the NGC 5-coin submission minimum? I have a couple coins in older or scuffed holders that I wouldn't mind getting put in the newer, nicer, scratch-resistant holders. Otherwise I'd be hard-pressed to round up 5 coins worth submitting.
