I was doing some roll searching and found this. It is a 1985D Kennedy half. I would normally overlook it, but the edges are not clad? has anyone ever heard of this? could it be an error? It has the likeness of a proof on the reverse, but normal appearance on the obverse. take a look at the photos and let me know what you guys think? thanks

That is interesting, I too would look at that and think it is silver.

I'm 99% sure it's just plated, but weigh it to be sure.

Quote: I'm 99% sure it's just plated, but weigh it to be sure. I'm not that sure but about 98.753% sure. Try weighing it. Or hitting with a Torch and if it melts down to all Silver, you really DID HAVE something.

Weigh it, or do a slight ring test. Silver makes a distinct sound when lightly dropped from a short distance..

Weighing it would probably be the best test, but there were no silver 1985-D halves minted (unless some enterprising Mint employee somehow got ahold of a silver planchet for a half, which seems unlikely but I suppose not impossible).
My guess is that it's plated. That reverse does look really nice from the photo.

thanks everyone for the replies... so I did the ring test and it sounds exactly like a 90% that I have to compare it too...
It is a beautiful coin, I think I might hold on to it and do a little more research. It does not look counterfiet to me, but I'm not lucky enough of a guy to find a "gem" in my roll searching.
I think I might take it to the coin shop and let someone inspect it closer and see what they think... I know I'm not selling it until I know for sure what it is...

Very interesting find. It would be nice to know the weight of it though.
11.34 grams as copper-nickel clad 11.50 grams as 40% silver clad 12.50 grams as 90% silver
Possible that a mint employee could have slipped a silver planchet into the bin on its way to be minted?
Or maybe a defective planchet where the copper core wasn't exposed? The ring test really defeats that theory though.
Hmmm. Very strange. Glad to hear you found something interesting.

It's *really* difficult to mistake the sound of 90% silver for clad.
If it's heavy in the 11.5g+ range, I would very strongly suggest that you send it into a grading service to have it authenticated.

Since plating adds another layer of metal on the coin, how much of the depth of the design is lost, if any?
Is it possible to notice a difference with two coins side by side?
