cherrypicked this dime, it seemed that the crack had to have been from a die due to its placement (notice the letters unaffected?). opinions greatly appreciated!

and, just for the sake of completeness, here is the obverse of the coin:

actually, after thinking about it, a die crack would be raised wouldn't it.
maybe this is just a planchet error, or post damage, hm. no idea.

this coin'll keep my 1916d company though!

Hi Opne,
The "line", while it does not cross the letters in "ONE DIME", DOES cross into the devices at the one and seven o'clock position. [Using the old fashioned analog clock.]
But I won't judge at present.
A decent, fine example, no matter what.

Ok, its not a die crack, but what the heck is it? How could a scratch, for example, not affect the letters it "passes" through...although perhaps it is a series of collinear and separate scratches?

Could it have been a bit of steel wire or shavings from a freshly -reworked but not de-burred die? Perhaps a burr fell off into the coin and left an impression? Maybe I am making a mountain out of a molehill....

^ that's what I'm wondering! hmm, War Nickel, I think your wire story is plausible, except wouldn't that leave an impression on the letters as well? unless the wire decided to not exist in those areas for some reason? Hopefully an experienced collector could give us some insight.

edit:
I've been looking at this coin through various lights, loupes, and microscopes for a while now. The best explanation I've come up with is that there was a crack across the whole planchet. During the striking process there was enough pressure (and extra metal) to fill the cracks on the highest points of the coin. This is, of course, just speculation.

What is the story behind this coin...?

looks like it was scratched early in its life, and the scratch was mostly worn away on the devices.
