I don't know much about grading but I'll take a shot -- AU50 -- and wait to be educated by the experts.

I think I see something odd on the left side of the eagle's neck. Is that damage or some kind of clash mark?

It doesn't even look like the material is silver. Perhaps some sort of alloy. Also, something does not look quite right with the rim/dentils on either side of the coin

Is this person only posting these coins on ebay in Portugal? If so, a seller only posting in countries other than the U.S., is probably trying to hide something that collectors in the U.S. would see right away. Just like with this coin and the other 2 you asked about.

Please be careful. You are doing the right thing by checking with the folks here at CCF! Good Job!
Rest in Peace

Okay -- I checked back sometime after my post and was shocked to see that everybody thinks it's a fake. So I studied the photos....and then gave up.

But it's bugging me. I'm a newbie but I am devoting a couple of hours every day to coins -- not always Morgans. What am I missing? People post that 'something is off' but I am missing whatever it is they are seeing.

As for the color of the metal -- I would have assumed that was a lighting problem. I've seen 'silver' look like 'gold' in photos.

Help!

Meanwhile ...back to the coin facts photos.....

The center is waaaaay too weak. For that to be wear, one should see wear out at the rim as well. Speaking of the rim, it's off-center and quite clumsy. Either of these are, IMO, proof positive it's a counterfeit.

Thank you very much SuperDave. I just flat out missed those things.

I spent over an hour this morning looking at 1967 quarters through a loupe and the variety of ways that a quarter shows wear seemed unending. But it is really just the minute differences that are varied. Overall all the worn quarters were flattened and, as you said, they were indeed similar overall. If Washington's portrait was worn, the rims showed similar wear.

Thank you very much for the information. I have been wanting to add to my Morgan collection but it's scary out there when you don't know enough.

It's like anything else, Buddy. Once you've seen enough of them, it becomes something that happens in the background of your thinking, not the foreground. I knew at a glance this coin was a fake, but then had to backtrack to identify specific features which make it so.

Mysterimen, I have to tell you we're really starting to wonder about the number of fakes you're posting here.

This coin screamed counterfeit at me from the first second I saw it. The wear pattern is something you would never see on the genuine article.
