Hi, I have a 1907 Funf mark coin which has been converted to hold a chain. On one side it has an eagle and says deutsches reich but on the other side it has 2 large initials which I think are a (d & r) or (r & r) I've been searching online to try to value this but cannot find another one similar. does anyone have any ideas. kind regards

Hum, it's either a restrike (I don't think so) made for jewelry, or a coin transformed as a medal : one side is a proper 5 marks, but the other side is not that of this coin.
Maybe it have been polished / crafter with those initials ? (BR or something similar)

Hard to guess the size from the image ;) but an actual 5M coin from that time would be a fairly large silver piece, with a diameter of 38 mm. If yours is smaller (and I believe it is), that piece was not made from an original coin but from a smaller replica. Those initials look quite ornate and attractive in my opinion, almost ornate. Does not make the piece valuable though ...

Assuming that the coin is genuine, you have what we in the US call
a "Love Token." Men with little money but with a lot of time and talent would carve the initials of their girl friends on a coin and present it in lieu of more expensive jewelry.

These love tokens enjoy a modest popularity but seldom command
any significant premium.

Here is a link to an example:

Hi, I have just measured the coin across and it is 38mm. I think that it is a real coin as it has writing around the outer rim which is a bit worn. I think it could well be a love token, I have looked up a few on ebay and it seems that they are quite popular. Thank you for all your replies and helping me out. kind regards

Hello mlc and welcome. As stated earlier, you have one side of a genuine coin. If you do an image search in google you will see that all of the 1907 5 mark coins have a depiction of a man's head on the obverse. Of course, yours does not. It is most likely what matthew stated above and a "love token". Value depends on how many folks are interested in that type.
