Just won this coin on an auction site. It's a consolation prize--not what I was hoping to grab. But the price was right.

Here she is:

No fair peeking at the "auction site"!

Haven't had alot of experience with these but this one looks really nice. From what I do know I would have to go at least MS-64 but more likely MS-65. Its a really nice looking Walker tm.

I'd be consoled if I'd just bought that.

If you call that a consolation prize, I'd love to see what you were trying to get!!

I'd give this an MS-65... beautiful coin!

Thanks, all, for your comments! I apologize for the delay in responding, but I was on a quick trip to D.C. [it's our Nation's capital, you know?]

To Jim, although I haven't held the coin yet, I trust that PCGS got it right and the lack of definition we see is from a weak strike.

As to why this coin was a "consolaiton", I was shooting for a coin with a mint mark and a full strike. As Jim points out, she's not all there. Also, I was aiming for a 64.

Yeah, I'll let that sink in. It's not a 64.

Mint state Walkers are still very new to me, but I think this is a PQ 63 and from your comments, you do too! The fields look clean like a 65 to me. The best I can guess is that two hits I can see in the devices brought it down. One is in the flag/skirt lines on her back thigh, the other in one of the sun's rays.

I have heard it said on these boards that TPGs are very tough on Walkers with hits in the devices. If nothing else was responsible, I'd have to agree!

BTW, the winning bid on Teletrade was $30. Add $12 for Buyers' premium and shipping, she was $42 delivered.

A very nice Walker.

One thing that will bring down the grade at PCGS is a lack of luster. I've had Walkers grade 63 for this reason. Here is a PCGS MS65 from my collection. I could crack it out and send it in next week and it could come back MS63. ;)
I don't worry about grades to much anymore just great strikes.
