http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-D-Mercury-...NR_W0QQitemZ320073601397QQihZ011QQcategoryZ41091QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This looks like a full good to me. The rim is worn into the tops of the letters a bit on the back, but not too much. Photograde for G-4 says that the reverse can "be worn down to the tops of the letters". So what do you think AG or G? I think the grade's a bit conservative. Heck, a lot conservative. I just looked at much poorer examples graded G4, in everybody's slabs, at Heritage. That's a G4 coin.

Thanks for the confirmation Dave. If I had a bit more spending money right now I might bid on it. When I do have the money for a 16-D I will look for one like this!!! Thundercoin

Definitely a G4 coin (and I tend to be conservative). I wonder what that grader was thinking that day...

Hmmm, I tend to agree.
NGC probably would have given it a "First Strike" designation though.

This is definitely a G-4. ANACS just got this one wrong. There is no way this is an AG-3. It needs to be sent to PCGS in my opinion.

If I had the money that is exactly what I would do. However, it would take me all year of saving my coin budget to get that kind of cash.

I could come up with the money to buy it and resell it if I really wanted too, (said as I dig into the emergency savings account ).... it's just if I got it I have a feeling I would never sell it and I can't justify buying this coin to keep. Thundercoin

Right, Unfortunately I would keep it. I might send it off to PCGS because I strongly feel that it is G-4. I collect Mercs so it would stay with me.

It's at $545 with more than a day left. No doubt, it'll sell for more than market for G4.

What do you consider market for G-4, Dave?
Looking at heritage AG-3 market seems to be $550 or so, and the last G-4's that weren't damaged were $840 or $920. (These G-4's didn't look as good as the AG-3 in this auction!)
I don't think this coin will go for $800, but it wouldn't surprise me if it ended up around $700.

I'm in the same frame of mind as you, Thundercoin. I base my "market" value estimates mostly on Heritage results. My bet is this coin will see $900, which, counting Heritage's juice, would put it over market. Of course, you'd pay a dealer $1100 for it.

It definitely looks like a G4 all day long. Perhaps they net graded it because it looked a bit scruffy to them, but some scruffiness is acceptable in a lower grade coin.
