Decided to try and find one cheaper than the one I posted earlier, and ended up buying this one. The main thing that attracted me was the clear monogram. I'm probably the only ancient Roman coin collector that would rejoice this much for getting a Marcian lol but whatever, that's part of my preferences and I'm sticking to it! Marcian (450-457 AD), AE4 Obv: DN MARCIANVS PF AVG Rev: Monogram within wreath with cross above, CON in ex RIC 545, Constantinople 11 mm, 1.1 g (seller's pic) Depending on how it looks in hand I may or may not clean the obverse.

It would appear that your coin and mine should be in a beauty contest to see which is in worse condition. I think mine is in the poorest condition. I'm glad you finally got a Marcian.

Quote: It would appear that your coin and mine should be in a beauty contest to see which is in worse condition. At least they are both fillers. And yours has a bit of the legend and the bust on the obverse still visible, which is good. Thanks for the compliments guys!

Thanks gil-galad! Yeah, with these really late Romans, as long as it isn't a terrible-looking basal-state pebble, I don't mind lol.

With those 5th century Romans, it's just hard to be sure what the coin exactly is as far as attribution is concerned. Remember that Zeno coin I posted awhile back? Well, revised research makes me believe it is either a Leo I or Leontius. I still ain't sure which one of those two. I also posted in some other places about the coin.
One day I will also be looking for a Marcian. For now, there are many many more coins to purchase. lol

Quote: Remember that Zeno coin I posted awhile back? Well, revised research makes me believe it is either a Leo I or Leontius. Yeah I remember. Probably could just use a bit of cleaning, because from what I remember it had a bit of crust and dirt on the obverse, which had decent detail. What really leaves me wondering is how, with late Romans of this time period, some sellers are able to ID beat up little pieces of metal with practically no visible detail remaining. They could be wrong but still... Quote: For now, there are many many more coins to purchase. lol I definitely know that feeling lol. Too bad my wallet would have a heart attack if I gave in all of my buying urges.

When I get it in hand, it is going to be my "youngest" Roman coin, beating out my Val III.

I'm curious about how much you paid for this Marcian coin. I know I'll have to look for one sometime in the future.

Paid $14 shipped for it. The one I posted a couple weeks earlier was $33 shipped.

That's not a bad price at all. I've seen those go for much higher.
