Poll Question
I'm just curious where everybody goes to find coins... To answer the question, I research coins on Teletrade and Heritage, but I haven't bought any yet. Normally, I like to go to local shows. I have Long Beach nearby, and that's as far away as the nearest smaller show, so that's easy for me. But most importantly, where do you go for deals? When I'm looking to score a deal, I go to ebay. Anybody else have anything they're willing to share?

If I'm looking for a good deal I most definitely stay away from ebay. My local shop will sell stuff to me at grey sheet bid or a little less. When I buy stuff off ebay its 99 percent of the time at full retail plus some.

Best deals I've found have been at the flea market. I check Craigslist regularly but haven't seen anything good. I need to start checking cash-for-gold places, having seen some of the silver coins people get at those for close to melt value.

Weekend markets seem to be pretty good for picking up the occasional good deal. The only thing that frustrates me is the people who have an old coin and automatically assume its worth big bucks.

My best deals ever have come from either a flea market or garage/yard/estate sales. This poll neglected to list any of those. Coin shows a decent 3rd for me close to friends and neighbors.

I agree with @turtleoverhead.
I look everywhere. I find that local coin shops don't do a lot a world coin business so I can find deals on those there, where the flea market has a lot of junk silver that you can get much cheaper then the coin shops. I think different places have different deals. You just need to look.

For the last few years I have kept to my local coin show (twice-yearly). I often look at the offerings here on CCF and will probably buy something one day.

Quote: Added some choices to the poll, Carl! =) To late for me. I already voted. One of my best, greatest and most valuable purchases was from a garage sale. I had asked if any old coins and the lady went into the house and came out with a jar of really old cents. Newest one was in the 50's. Lots of Indian cents on the bottom and I paid a fraction over face value.

I picked the small dealer but actually I am buying my coins from an antique shop. but the owner mostly trades new and old world coins and banknotes.

I cannot believe there is only one vote for coin shows.

Quote: cannot believe there is only one vote for coin shows. Kind of a problem with most polls here. You only get one choice. And the original post was for best deals, not all the place you look for coins. For me I go to coin shows all the time but my best and greatest DEALS have been from flea markets and garage/yard sales. Polls like this would be more factual if you could put down your choices in order. Then it would be a 4, 9, 3, type of answer. Not that those numbers mean anything here.

Yeah, jbuck - I know a couple of people who specialize in cherry picking incredible coins at coin shows, but I don't know too many people that do that exclusively. They often (more often) find better deals at other places too...
Carl - that's an interesting point. I could have easily accomplished that by listing numbers next to each answer and asked respondents to list (if they so wish) their favorite few in order... Thanky! =)
