One of my biggest disappointments with collecting is my perceived need to be secretive. I would love to share great buys with friends but fear having people think I have Fort Knox in my house. I keep anything of real value in the safety deposit box, but a crook would not know this. Short of turning my home into security vault with armed guards am I over reacting or is this a byproduct with our passion? Locally, almost no one knows I even like coins. Jim

On top of that, even if you could show them off, not many people would actually be inspired by them very much. But it's not about them, is it? They are your coins, it's your hobby, so enjoy them yourself!

Have you considered joining a local coin club if there's one in your area?

I used to keep coin in a bank vault, but thought "What is the use of having them if I can't enjoy them?" Get insurance and put them on display in your study or bedroom where you, at least, can enjoy looking at them. Friends and neighbors who don't collect coins probably don't care to see them -- something like boring them with family photo albums.

Jim, if you removed your private information from you account here (i.e. location and real name) you could post all you like with no fear. Use a pseudonymn and fake location (if any) to throw off would-be thieves.
You probably don't have to turn your home into a vault, but make sure you have secure locks on all doors and windows, and keep your expensive items in a heavy safe. We just bought a 210 pound safe that would slow someone down a bit. I can eventually bolt it to the floor as well.
I also think that extra insurance is a good idea, although that may require an appraisal.
Regards, ~neuron

that is one good thing about these forums, you can show off your collection and talk about it and no one actually knows exactly where you live so no need to be suspicious about anyone reading your threads. Thats why the forums are such a good place for collectors, they can talk about what they love and feel the security that goes along with the internet (unless you tell them where you live)

Maybe I am paranoid, but lets take a little example: JoeBlow has shown a lot of gold and valuable coins on here. Now, JoeBlow does not have any relevant info posted here as to where he lives. Ok, Good enough. But one day, JoeBlow posts an E-bay auction he has listed. Ok, It says location of somewhere, USA. Fine. Hidden location. Well. Old Joe is selling some not so valuable coins to prune stuff sitting around. I, JohnCrook, create a paypal account, buy a $10 coin from JoeBlow, and when it comes, I now have the address to all of JoeBlow's coins..... See, you have to be REALLY careful today. Sorry about being so paranoid, but I used to work as a deputy, and have seen people cleaned out by crooks in less than 15 minutes. Problem is, these victims live with the loss forever. MM

MM, your scenario is both credible and paranoid. Double points!

I have often thought about this.
The coins I have at home wouldn't be worth risking prison for a crook. The very few I have with any value are in a safety deposit box. And, yes, it is too bad that I have to go to a bank to look at them.
One day I'll see if I can afford insurance so that I can bring them home.
It's too bad things are this way, but it's the world we live in.

How many people who post on here have been robbed? JoeBlow on here should not use the same name on ebay. Keep the two areas seperate. Joe Blow on ebay sells modest coins..no one on ebay knows Joe Blow has minty stuff at home. Joe Blow uses a POBox for all ebay transactions and doesn't take paypal. The fees aren't worth it for moderately priced coins. Joe takes cash/check and MO through the mail. No one knows where Joe lives and Joe can enjoy his Minty coins at home in peace.

I use a post office box for my ebay dealings for that very reason. quote: The coins I have at home wouldn't be worth risking prison for a crook.
Except for the most part, crooks are about as smart as a brick. If they hear about coins, they'll pursue them. Anyone I've shown a beat to poop common Morgan to has informed me that "it must be worth a couple of thousand bucks, EASY" Mine are in a safe bolted to the floor. The safe deposit box doesn't work, because I like to look at them!

Thats why I ship all my ebay items with a P.O. Box number not my physical address as I see many others here do as well

If someone wants to find you, they will. If someone is going to steal anything from someone, whether it be coins or anything else, trying to hide where you live etc. is a moot point. The information is out there if you really want to find someone. The best we can do is hope that a safe bolted to the floor is enough of a deterrent not to loose valuable items. Unfortunately this is the world we live in.

Spend $500 dollars and buy a gun safe. They weigh 600lb+,they bolt to the floor, and no one is going to get it open. You will sleep better at night.
Gary, You would be suprised at the risks a robber needing drugs, will take to get them.Your life and theirs means nothing to that person,If it stands in the way of the next fix. Terry

I really did not expect advise on this, more I was expect commiseration. It should not surprise me though, that the advise is what I really needed. I will be changing my ID shortly, checking my info on ebay and getting a P.O. box asap. And, all of you are right. The friends and family really are not interested. Sure glad you guys are here to share with. thx friends, Jim
